Price – EVGA GeForce RTX 3050 XC gaming 08G-P5-3553-KR 8GB GDDR6

Its GeForce RTX 3050 desktop GPU, launching today, starts with cards at an ostensible $249 list price, and it’s the new GPU that has impressed us the most in 2022 so far (mind you, of just two). We tested it in the form of EVGA’s GeForce RTX 3050 XC Black Gaming 8G, one of a host of RTX 3050 cards launching today.

On eBay, an RTX 2060 Founders Edition runs between $400 and $600, depending on the seller and the number of bids. At least on paper, that would make the MSRP of the new EVGA GeForce RTX 3050 XC Black Gaming 8G a steal at “just” $249.99. (Whether you can find one at that price from a first-party seller is another matter.)

Design

The video card is quite compact at just 7.94 inches in length, 4.33 inches in height, and 2-slot.  It should fit in very small cases very easily. The dual-slot, dual-fan EVGA GeForce RTX 3050 XC Black Gaming 8G is just 7.94 inches long, which is just fine for both builders and upgraders of compact PCs, as well as owners of standard-size rigs. 

Ports

On the port selection for the RTX 3050 model we tested, there’s simply no comparison to the RX 6500 XT. Where that card had just two ports, the back of our EVGA card upholds the RTX 30 Series standard with three DisplayPort 1.4b outputs and one HDMI 2.1 port. 

Memory

On the memory side of things, the GeForce RTX 3050 is equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, so even at 1080p, it will have plenty for today’s and future games.  This means it is potentially capable of High to Ultra settings at 1080p without thrashing out of the framebuffer.  The memory runs at 14GHz and with a 128-bit memory interface, this gives it 224GB/s of memory bandwidth.  This is 75% more than the GTX 1650.

Frame rates

As a ray-tracing engine, the card performs surprisingly well, keeping price-for-performance pace with the GeForce RTX 3060, and it sometimes clears the 1440p/60-frames-per-second hurdle that many gamers aim to jump.

In many of the AAA tests, the RTX 3050 straddled an odd line where it was regularly pushing above the 1080p/60fps minimum barrier we were expecting out of it, but short of the 1080p/120fps we were hoping for it. Overall, you can expect a 60fps experience with a few settings turned down, but those looking for a high-refresh AAA experience will want to look toward step-up options like the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti instead. 

Temperature

While it’s very compact, the EVGA cooler works well and reaches good temperatures of only 60°C. Noise levels are a tad bit high with 33 dBA. It would have been easy to tune the fan curve for slightly higher temperatures with much lower noise output. I only wish they had included a backplate, too.

Cooling

EVGA’s thermal solution uses two heatpipes that go along the whole width of the card. The main cooling plate also provides cooling for the memory chips and VRM circuitry. The outer cooler shroud, even though made from plastic, has a very nice texture to it that feels like high-quality.

Power consumption

The GTX 1650’s rating was just 75 watts; the RTX 3050 pushes that up to 130 watts, a substantial difference that shouldn’t be overlooked if you’re not sure what sort of power limits your desktop can handle.

Overclocking

When it came time to overclock the card using MSI’s Afterburner utility, I was able to achieve a stable overclock of 175MHz added to the boost clock, and 195MHz added to the memory clock. This represented a 9.8% increase in clock speed from stock, and resulted in an eerily close 9.7% boost in frames when we tested Far Cry 5 in 1080p, a lead that was extended to nearly 13% when we moved to 1440p. That is a strong result for such a small card.

It starts off above 1997MHz but falls between 1977-1987MHz mostly while gaming.  We theorize that the 1777MHz version of this card would boost to around 1900MHz+. Compared to the 1845MHz boost that is about 7-8% higher, and compared to the 1777MHz boost that is about a 12% boost.  That’s a very high clock speed to start with over the boost clock, so it will be interesting to see how much headroom it has for overclocking.

If you’re shopping for components for your gaming PC build on a budget and lucky enough to come across the EVGA RTX 3060 XC Black at its retail price of $349, it’s a very worthwhile component. You’ll be getting a ton of power for your dollar with 3,585 CUDA Cores offering speeds and capabilities more in line with the previous generation’s RTX 2070 than with the RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Super that it succeeds.

The EVGA RTX 3060 XC Black also dials things up above the stock RTX 3060. That comes in the form of a ramped up clock speed that we saw exceed the default boost clock of 1,777MHz, even going as high as 1.9GHz in our testing. EVGA has also built the RTX 3060 XC Black to run fairly cool and quiet, as it peaked at 69C and 36dB in our testing. The 1080p graphics card works great, but if you want to do any 1440p gaming, you may have to turn down your settings. As a bonus for those who like a subtle build, the card is also all black, including the PCB.

For an incredible marriage of performance and price, you can’t do better than the new Nvidia RTX 3070. This card costs just $500, but it is capable of offering performance levels exceeding even the Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, which had been retailing often for more than three times the price of the RTX 3070.

This latest model offers up 5,888 CUDA cores that can run at a decent clip with a 1,730MHz boost clock. The ray tracing performance will fully immerse you in your games thanks to its RT cores. It also includes 8GB of GDDR6, so you’ll have plenty of memory for game textures and frame buffer. This card can do some 4K if that’s your aim, but it’s best suited for maxing out on 1440p. We’re not talking 1440p/60Hz either, but rather high-speed and high-resolution gaming.
