The Fossil Gen 5 and Gen 5E Smartwatches are classy, versatile, and a step in the right direction. Both of these watches have a dimention of 44 x 44 x 12 mm.

Side button

The Fossil Gen 5 has two easy-to-use side buttons and a rotating crown for navigating through menus. These models are compatible with 22 mm interchangeable bands. In Gen 5E, you have a side button, it doesn’t have a rotating crown.

Band size

Gen 5  only comes in one size (44mm), but there are multiple variants to pick from depending on what look you’re trying to achieve. Gen 5E, the larger 44mm models come in a few different masculine designs, including Black Stainless Steel and Brown Leather. The smaller 42mm models are available in more feminine designs, like Blush Silicone and Rose Gold Stainless Steel. Both of these watches have battery saving feaure. Extended Mode allows you to use essential features every day while only needing a charge every few days. If you don’t want to be limited in using your smartwatch, Daily Mode will still require you to charge it each night.

Then, there’s time-only mode, which switches the watch to solely a watch. Practical it might not be, but it does potentially provide your smartwatch with weeks worth of charge, providing you don’t mind your smartwatch turning dumb that is.

There are four in all. There’s Daily Mode, which keeps every feature switched on and understandably drains the battery fastest. Then there’s Extended Battery Mode which schedules Bluetooth for certain parts of the day (such as switching it off while you’re sleeping). This also turns off a few other features.

Water resistant

The Fossil Gen 5E and Gen 5 are also water resistant up to 3ATM, right down to its swim-proof speaker. That speaker allows your watch to talk back to you when using Google Assistant, as well as allowing you to take calls from your watch.

Google fit

The Google Fit app for iOS is much improved in recent times though, and while we’d still recommend a third-party app instead, Google Fit is a decent enough starting place for occasional fitness fans.

Fitness tracking is conducted primarily via Google Fit, which works well for both Android and iOS users. It uses Move Minutes and Heart Points to track how you perform, which is ideal if you don’t want to get too bogged down in technical details. As always, installing a third-party app can be a useful bonus if you’re keen to track the finer stats.
