The Apple Watch SE has the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and the always-on altimeter as the Series 6. It also has fall detection, noise monitoring, emergency SOS, and international emergency calling, things you don’t get on the Apple Watch 3. What is good in Apple Watch SE 40mm GPS + Cellular at this price?
Design
The same curved outline, which folds elegantly into the OLED display (more on that in a moment) is present and correct, packing the Digital Crown that rolls pleasantly under the finger when you’re using it to scroll through a list on the Watch face.
Below that resides the power / multitasking button, which you can use to flip through recently-opened apps to get back to the one you were just using.
Band sizes
Along with the Apple Watch 6 it’s also a ‘larger’ Apple Watch, coming with a wider display and offered in 40mm and 44mm sizes, compared to the still-on-sale-from-2017 Apple Watch 3, which is 38mm and 42mm, and packs a smaller screen..
Connectivity
The watch connects to an iPhone and the internet via Bluetooth and wifi, plus 4G for those models that support it and if you have a compatible phone plan. Most of the watch’s functions also work offline, such as health and fitness tracking but not notifications or maps. Apple Music can store tracks offline, for playing back via Bluetooth headphones for running or similar, but Spotify cannot.
Display
The 44mm model I tested has a screen resolution of 368 x 448 pixels; the smaller 40mm model has a 324 x 394-pixel display. It’s good that Apple offers the SE in two sizes; my wife tried on my review unit and thought it was too large for her smaller wrists.
Water resistant
The key features here are GPS and Glonass (another satellite the Watch SE can track to help improve location accuracy), 5 ATM water resistance, which means you can go swimming with this device down to 50 meters, and now on-board sleep tracking.
Running
The constantly-running altimeter is useful to let you know the true reflection of your elevation on a run – to the nearest foot according to Apple, although in side-by-side tests with the Apple Watch 6 on a workout we found that the height climbed and descended varied by 10-15 meters on a two-mile run.
Heart rate
Your heart rate and other data from your Watch will be displayed on whichever phone or TV screen you’re using, be it iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, and will alter dynamically depending on what the pre-recorded coach is asking you to do. It’s not cheap at $9.99 / £9.99 / AU$14.99 per month or $79.99 / £79.99 / AU$119.99 for a year, but new Watch buyers will get a three-month subscription with their purchase, while current Apple Watch owners can try out the service free for a month.
Battery life
The Apple Watch SE battery life is easy to review: it’s longer than you’d expect if you listened to Apple. The brand says you’ll get around 18 hours, or ‘all-day’ battery life, but the reality is that you’ll get much more than that.Advertisement
Thanks to the Watch SE display being turned off most of the time, we enjoyed 24-36 hours of use from a full charge during our testing – and that was with running nearly every day, so firing up the GPS for anything from 45 minutes to two hours.
Charging
The watch fully charges in 1 hour 52 minutes from flat using the magnetic charging cable and a standard 2A USB power adapter, which is just under 30 minutes longer than the Series 6 and about the same as the Series 5.
watchOS 7
With watchOS 7, the SE (as well as the Apple Watch 3 and later) also gets sleep tracking, a hand-washing app, and Apple’s new Fitness app, which includes new workout presets such as core training, functional strength training, cool down and dance.
The hand-washing guide worked, though it takes a few seconds for the watch to recognize what you’re doing. A gentle buzz lets you know the watch has started timing you, while a second buzz tells you your hands are clean enough.
Automatic activity tracking works pretty well. I was about 10 minutes into a brisk walk when the watch asked me if I wanted to record an activity; the Apple Watch’s GPS didn’t kick in until the last quarter mile, but the watch calculated my total walk as 0.75 miles, just one tenth a mile less than my actual distance.
Fall detection
Even though the Apple Watch SE doesn’t have Apple’s FDA-cleared ECG or blood oxygen apps like the Series 6, it still has plenty of health features to boast about. including fall detection and heart health notifications, which can be helpful when caring for aging parents.
If the wearer has taken a hard fall and remains motionless for a certain amount of time, the watch will automatically contact emergency services and send a message with the GPS coordinates to emergency contacts.
It also lets you know if you experience an abnormally low or high heart rate, or if it detects an irregular heart rhythm that may be indicative of atrial fibrillation (aFib), a serious heart condition.
Family Setup
If you plan to buy or hand down an Apple Watch to a family member who doesn’t already own an iPhone, you don’t have to invest in both devices. Instead, you can use Family Setup to initially set up the Apple Watch, and then they can use it untethered. The Apple Watch Cellular + GPS is the only Apple Watch model that supports Family Setup, so this is an important factor to consider when purchasing. You may not need cellular right now, but you may want to pass along your old Apple Watch to a friend or family someday in the future.
Family Setup works with the following Apple Watch versions:
- Apple Watch Series 4
- Apple Watch Series 5
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch SE
Apple Watch SE GPS + Cellular 40mm customer review 2021
Convenience, easy to synch and long life battery.
I bought this watch for my wife on mother’s day 2021. After all the researches for the differences of series and types of apple watch. I settled with this type that comes with Cellular option, it’s not to big and not to small for a woman that have a small wrist and you pay only 5 -10$ extra more monthly on top of your mobile bills. So far she loved it, she can leave the phone at home and go hiking or running, it’s tracks all of her activities, heart rates, steps, and more. The battery life is long enough for 1 and a half day of fully charged. But before use this watch you better have it charge fully. It easy to synch up with you phone and connect to your phone provider. I highly recommended and i will get one for myself too.
