ASUS M409 full HD 14 inch laptop review

Build and display

The first thing I noticed about the laptop is how light yet well-built it is. The laptop is made of plastic, however it really feels and looks like brushed metal giving it bit of a premium feel and look. When we turned on the laptop I also noticed how amazing the display is. At 14″ a 1080p resolution works perfectly. The thing that amazed me about this display is its colours though. I don’t think it’s an IPS display as the vertical viewing angles aren’t the greatest but the colours do look like those on an IPS. While vertical viewing angles aren’t great, horizontal viewing angles are perfect. The display also gets quite bright as initially it was actually set to only 60% brightness and was still brighter than any laptop I had used before.

Audio and camera

The speakers are of decent quality and when on max volume can easily fill up the room with sound with it even being heard in the next room. I can’t comment on the mic or camera quality as they haven’t been used yet, however I wouldn’t expect much as even expensive laptops have rubbish mics and cameras and these are things that are usually bought separately anyways.

Keyboard

The keyboard is good, with the keys having a really nice feel to them. It is an island style keyboard, with nice keys that are a bit larger than on most laptops and the letters printed on them are larger too which has helped my elderly grandmother a lot with being able to see each letter. The track-pad both tracks and clicks really well. It has the standard gesture control as on any other track-pad and I really liked the feel of it.

Gaming

I tried playing World of Warcraft on this machine at graphic option 3 out of 10, I get 30 to 60 frames out of it. I know its not supposed to be used like this but for what this laptop is it has surpassed my expectations. Its super fast to boot up, really responsive and has a 2 and a half hour battery life even when gaming on it. Honestly for a ryzen 3 with vega mobile graphics and 4 gig of ram it is really powerful. Asus is one of the best if not the best option for laptops. Oh yeah as expected the screen is great if you set it up right.

ASUS M409 full HD 14 inch laptop performance review

Now onto the specs and performance. I’ll start off by saying that it’s ridiculous to see laptops with only 4GB of RAM. This amount of RAM really is unacceptable and ridiculous, it is not enough for anything other than maybe having 2 or 3 web browser tabs open. I know it’s easy to buy another 4GB stick on Amazon and upgrade yourself but this isn’t something we should be doing. Laptops should come with 8GB of RAM minimum, an 8GB stick of RAM only costs 10 quid more than a 4GB one to buy (ASUS M409 RAM upgrade).

With that being out of the way I must say that everything runs really fast and smoothly as you would expect with an SSD. The Ryzen 3 processor, while being the entry-level Ryzen, is more than enough for normal daily tasks which this laptop has been used for over the past week. Installing, downloading and unzipping programs went smoothly without hiccups. Video playback with the integrated Vega graphics was also smooth with no dropped frames and with videos loading/starting instantly.

The only issue is the RAM limitation (ASUS M409 RAM upgrade) when you want to open more than a few tabs or want to have another programme running at the same time, it is then when things start to slow down but not massively so. I plan to fix this issue by adding another stick of RAM in the future once my grandmother learns how to use more programmes.

Finally the battery life. As my grandmother has only used the laptop for a week I don’t have much data to work with but so far so good. Watching HD video on YouTube for about 3 hours only drained the batter to about 50-60% with the brightness set to max, which is a great result for a laptop at this price and a result that some of the more expensive laptops don’t achieve. If the battery life changes I will update the review.

Alternate of ASUS M409 full HD 14 inch laptop

1. Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX531GX

The best Windows laptop for heavyweight computing

CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 (Max-Q) | RAM: Up to 24GB | Screen: 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS, 144Hz | Storage: 1TB SSD – 512GB/1TB SSD

Maybe you’re not in the market for a full-on workstation, but would prefer a notebook that runs Windows 10 Pro which can cut through heavyweight computing tasks, yet is actually designed to be a very capable machine for gaming? Then look no further than this Asus Zephyrus laptop.

The GX531GX comes packing an Intel Core i7-8750H six-core CPU backed with Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics. It can also cram in up to 24GB of system RAM, yet this notebook is also nicely slim and portable – Nvidia’s Max-Q technology helps there, of course.

With all this power at your fingertips, you can tackle heavyweight computing tasks such as video editing, and relax playing the latest and greatest shooter when all the work is done. However, as is always the case when high performance meets portability, you’re going to pay a considerable asking price.

2. Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701

The best Asus gaming laptop

CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 (8GB GDDR6 VRAM, Max-Q) | RAM: 24GB | Screen: 17.3-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) 144Hz panel | Storage: 1TB M.2 SSD

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is not only among the best Asus laptops in the world right now, but it’s also the best gaming laptop of 2020, bar none. It’s all thanks to Asus packing in a 6-core Intel processor and the latest RTX 2080 graphics from Nvidia. Better yet, Asus has also managed to keep the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 impressively thin and light. While most gaming laptops are big chunky affairs due to their high power components, but Asus has pulled off some brilliant design engineering to make the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 not much thicker or heavier than many standard laptops. It’s incredibly expensive, however, but for the price, you’re getting an amazing machine and one of the best Asus laptops ever made.

3. Asus Chromebook Flip

Premium Chromebook specs, economic Chromebook pricing

CPU: Intel Pentium 4405Y – Intel Core m3-6Y30 | Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 515 | RAM: 4GB | Screen: 12.5-inch, FHD (1,920 x 1,080) LED backlit anti-glare | Storage: 32GB – 64GB eMMC

The best Asus laptops aren’t just premium all-singing, all-dancing devices with huge price tags, as the excellent Asus Chromebook Flip C302 demonstrates. The Asus Chromebook Flip C302 brings a lot of what we love about Asus laptops to an affordable Chromebook that’s ideal for day-to-day tasks and for students working on their homework. That means it’s got excellent build quality, a fantastic design and packs some great hardware that makes it one of the best Chromebooks on sale in 2022, with an Intel Core processor, full 1080p display, touchscreen, backlit keyboard and USB-C port.
