Design

As far as the board itself goes, it’s eight inches long so it’ll fit in most cases quite easily. It features a metal backplate as part of its TUF design, and has a two-fan cooling apparatus. Asus recommends a 450w PSU for it.

Ports

Connectivity is decent. We have a single DVI-D here along with an HDMI and a DisplayPort. Perforations are also present on this side of the card to aid the cooling solution.

Frame rates

The GPU was tested on 32 games, using high presets and at 1920 x 1080 resolution. The GPU was able to achieve well above 60 FPS in most popular multiplayer games, like DOTA 2, CS:GO, PUBG, and the like. there were only 4 games that did not have an average of 60 FPS, which is Monster Hunter World, Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

All of which are pretty heavy games and have a knack of having some problems with optimization. While they did not achieve 60FPS, they were still able to reach 50+ FPS, with the exception of Red Dead Redemption 2 (which is a very demanding and unoptimized game), they were able to achieve the higher 50s.

Temperature

The advantage of the ASUS TUF 1660 Super is with the thermals since it features a quite massive form factor with 3 fans and the DirectCU III heatsink design. At idle, it sits cool at only around 36 degrees with an average temperature of 53 degrees on load and only spiked up to 64 degrees at max.

Cooling

With a 3 fan configuration, it is expected that the ASUS TUF 1660 Super is the loudest at 100% fan speed at 71.7 decibels. However, at idle, it’s relatively quiet at 40.6 decibels.

Power consumption

The main differences between the 1660 and the Ti version are pretty apparent; less CUDA cores, and slower memory, but they both have the same 120w TDP and run at roughly the same clock speeds. 

Overclocking

Asus gives the Dual a factory overclock, bumping the boost clock used during gaming from the GTX 1660 Super’s 1,785MHz stock speed up to 1,830MHz out of the box, or 1,860MHz if you install the company’s GPU Tweak II software and activate OC Mode.

So at default mode, which is the gaming mode, the GPU clock speed is at 1830Mhz, and turning on OC mode bumps it a little bit at 1860Mhz.

Best Budget Card On The Market w/ Midrange Perform

This is as what most reviewers and benchmarks show — the best budget card on the market — with fast DDR6 memory and stream processors, this card can game and stream on twitch for players first starting out or that want to dabble in that. It can even play COD at 60FPS on medium settings and we all know how resource heavy that game is. It can play all the demanding titles at 1080P medium settings at 60fps and competitive games over 144fps. If this is your first GPU and you’re on a budget and you just want to play in 1080p. This is your card. Hands down. No question. It’s got most of the recent Nvidia tech so you benefit off of it over using the older GTX models like the 1060.

Any custom PC builders looking to create something budget-friendly should love the NVIDIA GTX 1660 SUPER. It delivers a smooth 1080p performance and doesn’t have an unreasonable price.

The GPU demand has even driven up the price of last-gen cards. If you can find one at a reasonable cost, chances are you’ll nab it up.

It has 6GB of GDDR6 VRAM (the base GTX 1660 uses GDDR5) and rather high memory bandwidth at 336GB/s, allowing it to edge out even the 8GB version of the AMD RX 5500 XT in terms of raw performance. You’re going to see elevated, smooth frame rates at 1080p with pretty much any game, even at high settings.

Not everyone sees a need to game at a higher resolution than 1080p. Displays are more affordable, and fewer pixels generally allows for a much higher frame rate. If you’re not looking to overspend on a GPU, NVIDIA’s GTX 1660 SUPER should make a great pick. It’s not an RTX card, so it doesn’t offer dedicated ray-tracing cores, though a driver update does allow it to technically be compatible. DLSS 2.0 is not supported. It’s still based on Turing architecture that makes it relatively power efficient.

Do note that rumors of an RTX 3050 desktop release are picking up, and many are expecting to see the new budget GPU land early 2022. It’s unlikely that it will be the solution to any stock shortages, but if you can hold out for a while it might be worth it to see how much budget performance it brings compared to the GTX 1660 SUPER.
