Dell Inspiron 3880 10th Gen Intel Core i3 desktop review
Design
The Inspiron 3880 is notably compact and space-saving enough to overpower its contemporary desktops. The tower measures 12.8 by 6.1 by 11.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 10.8 pounds. The visual design is very simple. It’s an all-black rectangle, with a pleasant enough striped pattern on the front panel. The whole look and size befit the machine’s price and purpose as a no-fuss, plug-and-play desktop.
Ports
There’s plenty of functionality to be had, though. The front panel offers four USB Type-A ports (two USB 3.1 and two 2.0), as well as an SD card slot. There’s a slot where an optical drive could be, but our test unit didn’t have one.
The rest of the ports are located around back, including two more USB 3.1 Type-A ports and two more USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and VGA video outputs, and an Ethernet jack. By now, you’ve noticed that you get no USB Type-C ports, the only major missing link.
Processor & Storage
Inspiron desktops come with a 10th gen Intel I3, I5, or I7 processor. There is a lot more variation in CPUs in the laptop range, with AMD Ryzen chips and 11th gen Intel mobile CPUs on offer alongside the 10th Gen Intel options
Our model is outfitted with an Intel Core i5-10400 processor, 8GB of memory, and a 256GB solid-state drive. There are two memory slots, with one free and one occupied by a single 8GB DIMM stick in our configuration.
Graphics
The most powerful graphics card offered by Dell in configurations of the Inspiron 3880 is an Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, good for low-end gaming at most. Replacing the power supply yourself to install and juice up a more powerful video card looks like a no-go, given the small form factor and nonstandard power connections to the board.
More features – Dell Inspiron 3880 10th Gen Intel Core i3 desktop at this price
It comes with a basic wired keyboard and mouse combo and you can also use the system with the wireless mouse and keyboard of your choice.
The system is pre-loaded with Windows 10 Home 64-bit operating system. This OS provides you the recognizable feel of Windows with improved capabilities and latest features. The Bluetooth 4.2 and 802.11ac wireless connectivity available in the system offer smooth Internet access without any hassle.
There is even a downloadable program called Dell SupportAssist which you can install on your PC. This smart program runs in the background and constantly monitors your PC for issues with both your hardware and software. This software is free, but there is also a premium subscription that costs $39 per year which adds additional features like an antivirus, coverage for accidental damage and 24/7 real person support if you need it.
Dell Inspiron 3880 10th Gen Intel Core i3 desktop Performance review
12GB DDR4 SDRAM memory at 2666MHz offers a good amount of multitasking power for you to have several apps and browser tabs open simultaneously. 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive is a large amount of local storage space with a high speed that you’ll feel when you’re opening files or starting the system. You have two options on this system as the storage configurations, an M.2 2230 SSD up to 512 GB or a 3.5-inch hard-disk drive up to 2 TB. It has a 260W power supply that gives you the ability to grow.
The Inspiron led the way in PCMark 10, technically making it the most efficient machine here for everyday multitasking. It didn’t lead the Core i3-based Acer Aspire by much, but both are a marked step up from the processors of the other two Windows PCs. The Aspire’s snappy SSD, meanwhile, is as quick as its peers’, which means on-par boot and load times.
Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image, timing each operation and adding up the total. The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters, so systems with powerful graphics chips or cards may see a boost.
Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video editing trial, another tough, threaded workout that’s highly CPU-dependent and scales well with cores and threads. In it, we put a stopwatch on test systems as they transcode a standard 12-minute clip of 4K video (the open-source Blender demo movie Tears of Steel) to a 1080p MP4 file. Lower times are better.
3D rendering is beyond the capabilities of these desktop PCs and their integrated Intel UHD or AMD Radeon graphics. (Generally, Radeon integrated-graphics numbers tend to be pretty good relative to those of Intel UHD solutions, but in the two budget-minded Athlon implementations here, the Radeons underperform.)The Inspiron again took a slight lead, but it proved far from a gaming or animation powerhouse.
Dell Inspiron 3880 10th Gen Intel Core i3 desktop customer review
Optimal
My new Inspiron seems half the size of my old Inspiron but five times more powerful and much faster. The wireless keyboard and mouse are wonderful. Really gives me much more freedom. And my wireless Bose headphones are fantastic, but the Bose speakers are really remarkable. How can all that sound come from modest boxes? And it all fits on a desk top and file cabinet once crowded with room to spare. Hope to fill that with a new HP Envy printer and a new remote drive. I do wish the CD DVD drives would have been installed in the computer but I think I’ll do fine with a good independent device.
