What causes tooth staining and discolouration?

Tooth color varies from person to person. We are all born with different variations of teeth color in the white to yellow spectrum. Unfortunately, some people are more prone to tooth staining than others. This is predetermined by genetics. Genetics play a major role in susceptibility to discoloration of teeth, but over time, your natural tooth color can become discolored due to external and internal factors.

Some examples of tooth discoloration include:

  • External factors
  • Foods and beverages high in acid
  • Foods and beverages dark in pigment
  • aSmoking
  • Internal factors
  • Aging
  • Illness
  • Side effects from some medications

External factors that cause tooth discoloration stain the enamel, or surface of the tooth, and can typically be removed by teeth whitening. Internal factors that cause tooth discoloration stain the dentin, or layer beneath the enamel, and are difficult to remove by teeth whitening. Those with this type of staining may see a notable improvement in tooth color while others with internal staining may not.

GLO Brilliant complete teeth whitening system kit with led light Review

Design

The product packaging is very well-designed—sleek, with an all-white exterior—giving it the same sort of vibe as a brand-new Macbook or iPhone. The device itself, which is small, white, and rectangular-shaped with a single, simple “power” button actually looks like it could be iPhone’s little sister.

GLO Science GLO Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Device Kit includes:

  • Whitening G-Vials (10 count): A set of vials that feature light-activated and mint-flavored gel specially formulated with hydrogen peroxide to whiten your teeth without causing pain or sensitivity.
  • Lip Care (1 piece): A treatment that blends vitamins and antioxidants to moisturize, repair and protect dry lips.
  • Mouthpiece and Case (1 piece): A latex-free mouthpiece that holds the gel in place on your teeth while LED technology expedites the whitening process.
  • Dock (1 piece): A dock that stores and protects your GLO Brilliant Personal Teeth Whitening Device Kit.

The process is simple, but you’ll want to make sure that you charge your device before you go ahead and uncap any of the gel tubes and apply them to your teeth. It takes a while for the device to fully charge, so if you don’t budget for that, you’ll have primed your teeth for nothing and wasted a tube. You’ll also want to remember that the 32 minutes of daily application is divided into four sessions of 8 minutes, so you should pace the “G-Vial” to last all four sessions.

Once the GLO Control is fully charged, you’ll place the lanyard with the control over your neck, attach the mouthpiece, and then apply a thin layer of GLO Lip Care to your top and bottom lips both inside and out (or really any chapstick, in my experience). If you’ve got extra sensitive gums, you can apply Lip Care to your gums as well.

From there you’ll open the G-Vial (which comes in your set) and squeeze the gel onto the attached brush tip to apply a thin layer on your top and bottom teeth (front only). Here is where you’ll want to budget the gel to last you four sessions — for me, this wasn’t a problem and I often had leftovers which I used in the following day’s session.

Once your lips (and possibly gums) have Lip Care on and you’ve applied the gel to your teeth, you turn on the GLO control and pop the mouthpiece in your mouth. It feels like a mouthguard, and it lights up a bright blue. While GLO Science says you don’t need to, I usually avoided swallowing during the 8-minute sessions to avoid tasting the gel — this isn’t any different than Crest Whitestrips, though.

After 8 minutes the Control will automatically turn off, and you can rinse the mouthpiece in warm water and apply the second layer of gel from the G-vial for the next session. There’s no need to rinse your mouth out in between sessions. You’ll repeat the process of putting on gel, turning it on, and popping in the mouthpiece for four consecutive sessions total. You’ll do this for five consecutive days for the best results, and up to 10 days for the most drastic white.

GLO Whitening app

The GLO Whitening App connects wirelessly to your GLO Lit Teeth Whitening Device through Bluetooth. It acts as your own personal whitening concierge, allowing you to preview and track your results, customize and schedule your treatments, and receive reminder notifications so you never forget to whiten. You can also access tips and video tutorials through the app, monitor your battery power, and view your countdown timer so you always know exactly how much time you have left for each whitening application.

How does the GLO Professional take-home kit work?

The GLO Professional Take Home Kit uses patented GLO heat & light technology inside the mouthpiece, combined with specially formulated 10% hydrogen peroxide whitening gel. The whitening gel is applied directly to the teeth. When the mouthpiece is inserted, it traps the whitening oxygens against the teeth so they can’t escape and then gently warms them to the optimal temperature for accelerated whitening action.

What are the ingredients of GLO whitening gel?

Distilled Water, Polyethylene Glycol, Hydrogen Peroxide (10%), Potassium Nitrate, Glycerin, Edetate Disodium, Sodium Saccharin, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Hydroxide, Flavor.

What is the difference between – GLO Brilliant vs GLO LIT?

GLO Lit is the next generation of GLO Brilliant, which is original teeth whitening device using patented heat & light acceleration technology. Both devices use the exact same teeth whitening light & heat mouthpiece and the same GLO Vial whitening gel. GLO Lit adds a new Bluetooth-enabled Power Pack which pairs with the GLO Whitening App (GLO Brilliant vs GLO LIT). The App allows you to access additional features to optimize your whitening treatment including: previewing results, scheduling treatments, getting reminders to whiten, accessing tips and video tutorials, monitoring your battery power, tracking your progress and more (GLO Brilliant vs GLO LIT)! In addition, GLO Lit takes less time to charge than GLO Brilliant (1 hour vs 4 hours) and has a built in standard USB for charging in a regular USB port so there is no need for a USB cord or adapter. It also features two hands-free options (a lanyard and a garment clip).

How long will my whitening last?

Whitening your teeth is a little like coloring your hair – keeping up the perfect shade requires maintenance. Your individual maintenance program depends on a number of factors, including lifestyle, age, and original shade. For most people, we recommend completing a full whitening treatment to achieve your desired shade, then maintaining with 1 day of whitening each month (3 back to back applications), followed by another full whitening treatment after six months. That said, if you notice that your teeth are darkening or you feel like they could use some brightening, simply whiten as soon as you feel you need to, until you achieve your desired shade.

Can I use GLO Brilliant during orthodontic treatment?

We don’t recommend using the GLO Device while you have braces but you can use GLO Vials for easy brush on whitening with your brackets. You can use the GLO Device during aligner treatment (when your aligners are not in your mouth). GLO Vials also pair perfectly with aligners – just apply the gel to your teeth and put in your aligners over the gel. Use the GLO Device as soon as your get your braces off for a beautiful, straight, white smile!

Is GLO FDA registered?

Yes, the GLO Professional Teeth Whitening Device is a class 1 medical device and has been registered with the FDA.
