HP EliteDesk 800 G2 mini business desktop PC review
Design
It weighs 1218 grams and is 17x17x3.5cm. The way I have described it is Landscape but a small stand is provided to allow it to stand Portrait. Both sides are blank, the base has two rubber runners to keep a clear airflow and the top also has ventilation.
Casing
As the 800 G2 is a business PC, it has a very plain black casing. It’s very sturdy though as it’s made out of thick metal, yet it’s also easy to open up. Twist off one screw and the top plate slides off to reveal the interior.
Connectors
The front has a 3.5mm headphone socket and a 3.5 headphone/microphone socket, a USB type C connection and two USB3 ports, finally the on/off button. The rear has video connections for VGA and Display Port, plus a second Display Port option installed on my test unit but this could be an HDMI if you prefer. It also has two rows of two USB3 Ports an Ethernet Port and finally DC input.
Storage and upgrade
Our review unit came fitted with a fast 128GB NVMe M.2-based SSD. If you want to fit a bigger SSD, you’ll first have to remove the combined cooling fan and cage for an optional 2.5in SATA hard disk that sit on top of it. The existence of this cage means you could instead stick with the current SSD and rely on a bigger and cheaper, if slower, hard disk for storing your very big files instead.
The memory slots are tucked away under the processor cooler. It’s reasonably easy to remove by unscrewing three screws and then pulling it off with a modest amount of force. Although our unit came fitted with a plentiful 16GB of memory, you can still add more – up to a maximum of 32GB. You’ll have to dispose of the chips currently installed though as the 800 G2’s small size means there are only two RAM slots.
WiFi
There were three Intel-based WLAN modules and one HP module. The Intel models are 802.11ac with Bluetooth 4.x support. The HP unit is an 802.11a/b/g/n solution with Bluetooth 4.0.
Security feature
Along with the EliteDesk 800 and Windows, HP offers a set of security tools that go well beyond the basics, including HP Sure Click, HP Sure Start Gen4, HP Sure Run, HP Sure Recover, HP BIOSphere Gen4, Intel Identity Protection Technology, and multifactor authentication features. These include an optional fingerprint reader or webcam, both Windows Hello certified.
HP EliteDesk 800 G2 mini business desktop PC Performance review
I purchased the HP EliteDesk 800 for general home use. The Intel Core i5 4570 is a workhorse and a great improvement over the old computer it replaces. I find the 8 GB RAM sufficient and the 500 GB hard drive is quick enough for now. There is room to add another drive if I need more storage. For now I’m using Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage.
This supports dual monitors via display port, we got 2 DP to DVI-D adapters and it runs dual 21 inch 19200×1080 with no problem. I has 8MB of ram, not the fastest but it is reliable. The CPU was a quad-core with 4 threads and runs Citrix Receiver, Skype, 4 Excel sheets 4 browser windows, 1 command window, Thunderbird and 6 pdf windows while playing Soda crush, It took about an hour to set up with all the windows updates but activated the first time and I am very happy.
