UM250 mini PC AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 2500U review

Design & connectors

Minisforum’s UM250/UM300-series PCs come in an aluminum chassis. The 128 x 127 x 46 mm machine has three video outputs, with MINISFORUM equipping it with an HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort and USB Type-C ports. The UM250 has three USB 3.1 Type-A ports too, in addition to two Gigabit Ethernet ports and a pre-installed M.2 2230 Wi-Fi card that supports Bluetooth 5.1 and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. Most of the ports on the UM250 are, unsurprisingly, on its back panel. There are quite a few on the front though, including its USB Type-C connection.

Mounting

It can be easily mounted on the back of a VESA-enabled TV or monitor by the included VESA mount. The standard wall mounting bracket is included in the package.

Storage

The UM250/UM300 can also pack up to 32GB of DDR4 memory using two SO-DIMM slots, an M.2 SATA SSD, and a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or HDD.

Graphics

The tiny system can be powered by either AMD’s Ryzen 5 Pro 2500U (4C/8T, 2.0GHz – 3.60GHz, 6MB cache, Radeon Vega 8 GPU, 15W, 14LPP) or AMD’s Ryzen 3 3300U (4C/4T, 2.10GHz – 3.50GHz, 6MB cache, Radeon Vega 6 GPU, 15W, 12LP) APU.

WiFi

As for connectivity, the systems feature an Intel AX200 Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 adapter, two GbE ports (which will be particularly handy for corporate users).

UM250 mini PC AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 2500U Performance review

The Ryzen 5 Pro 2500U doesn’t do as well in single-threaded testing, losing by margins of 20%-30% to newer, more expensive processors. Just as unsurprisingly, we warn readers not to get unduly excited about this—truly single-threaded workloads are rare.

UM250 turns in some outstanding results—its somewhat-elderly Ryzen 5 Pro 2500U turns in Time Spy scores almost double what either Ice Lake i5-1035G1 or Comet Lake 15-10210U can manage. The UM250 even comes within yelling distance of the Ryzen 7 4700U-powered Acer Swift laptop.

When we drop down to Night Raid—the gaming benchmark targeted to non-gaming PCs—the lead shrinks a little, but it by no means disappears. UM250 still manages a solid 35% lead on its Intel-powered competitors.

I use it in combination with a travel screen and a handheld keyboard. I play heavy hitters like RDR2, Witcher 3, dark souls 3 and assassins creed odyssey at 45-60 fps with no hiccups or frame drops at all. Keep in mind I play on lower settings and sometimes use scaled resolution, but other than that, it’s amazing.
