ChargePoint Home Flex itself is well-made, and installers found the instructions clear and easy to follow. The cord is really thick and sturdy – much nicer than any public level 2 charger. The hardwiring dry wall cut was sealed with foam spray covered with rubber spray.
Measuring at 17 x 15 x 9.75 inches, it weighs around 17.6 pounds. It comes with all the hardware including drill bit, nut socket for your drill and hex screws for mounting. The cords clip into the charger using lever locks that provide a solid connection and don’t require tools.
ChargePoint Home Flex Cable length
It includes a generous cable length and plug holster is actually *very* easy (effortless) to hang the plug in the holster. It’s nice to have the long 23 foot cable.
Instruction clearly says that if you use plug-in, you can charge up to 40A (on a 50A breaker that would come with NEMA plug). If you want to have full 50A charging speed, install hard wired on 70A breaker. Or go with 60A breaker, and you will get 48A charging speed. Obviously hire electrician to do that installation.

This is a great adjustable charging station. this device supports up to 50 amp charging output, but only hard wired with 4 AWG wire. With the included plug it is limited to 40 amp output. It is easy to remove plug and have electrician hardwire device.

The J1772 connector that’s used by the ChargePoint Home Flex is a custom connector. The Home Flex comes with a high-quality connector, and the handle has a pronounced taper where your index finger resides. The ChargePoint Home Flex has an exaggerated tapered edge leading into the connector holster. The tapered edge helps to guide the connector into its locking position.

Tesla Model 3 with car’s J1772 adapter, the Tesla charges very quickly at over 11 kW continuous, about 50% faster than my original ChargePoint home. Most cars are limited to 32 amp, but some newer models support faster.
Since it has 20-30 mile EV range (depending on outside temperature), it charged overnight at that level. However when I got a Kia Niro EV (250 mile range), it was time to upgrade to higher charge rates of the Level 2 charger.
It works beautifully. Our Honda came with a 110 (!) charger which would take 19 to 24 hours to do a charge. This one filled the “tank” in 1 hours 20 minutes. So worth it.
ChargePoint Home Flex App
The WiFi connectivity and smartphone app are very handy and useful. When the car is charging you can use ChargePoint App to check status and total power as well as estimated cost based on your utility. The app also estimates how much the charge cost you based on your local utility rates and how many miles were added.
The software setup was also pretty fast/east. It has Bluetooth which exists pretty much exclusively to simplify the setup. Install the ChargePoint app on your phone. The phone will use Bluetooth to find the charger … then configures the charger to join your home WiFi. At that point the charger uses WiFi (there’s a light on the side to confirm it using WiFi) and it wont use Bluetooth anymore.
The setup app will ask you to set the amperage of your BREAKER and will automatically set the maximum charge amperage to not exceed 80% of what the breaker can handle. E.g. if you tell it you have a 60 amp breaker it will configure the charger to 48 amps of vehicle charging. It also includes a sheet with stickers (one to to label the breaker and another to label the amperage supplied by the charger.

If you have 6-50 or 14-50 outlet you can install yourself as no wiring beyond connecting charging cord is required. My install is for my Tesla Model 3 with 48 amp charging so I hard wired using suitable wire and breaker (60 amp) and removed the 6-50 plug as that is only suitable for 40 amp output. Once it is wired and powered on, you have to connect to the device through your smartphone and use the ChargePoint app to connect and configure device.
