Electrify America Home charging station review

Build

The body is all plastic. Despite being all plastic it seems solid and very well designed. You will have no problem wrapping the cable around it for storage. The charging cable is sturdy but still flexible. Built-in receptacle works well with its spring loaded door. The unit “senses” when someone is approaching and lights up.

Design

It weighs 19.80 pounds and measures at 15.75″ x 8.66″ x 6.75″. It features a slim black silhouette that lights up blue while actively charging, and green to indicate readiness of use. HomeStation was styled by world renowned design and engineering firm Italdesign.

Cable length

The cable with the NEMA 14-50 plug is thicker than I expected. The charging cable going to the J-1772 plug is 3 times the diameter of most home chargers and the the J-1772 is very solid, docks with a satisfying click.  It comes with a long 24-25′ cableand good enough to use in garage even.

Display

It has a cool factor with clear LED visuals to give your charging status. Charging is indicated with a blue light stripe going all around the edge of the front face that turns green once charging is complete. The light turns off after a while when no one is present, so won’t light up the neighborhood at night.

NEMA Plug

The HomeStation can be plugged in using a NEMA 14-50 style plug or hardwired by a licensed and qualified electrician. Desired output can be designated via the mobile app and with the input of a licensed and qualified electrician.

To help limit installation costs and possibly prevent panel upgrades, the charger’s maximum output can be configured during installation for 40 amps, 32 amps, or 16 amps to fit almost any home electrical panel rating.

Charge speed

Electrify America DC fast chargers are the fastest on the market today and can charge compatible EVs at 350kW. For cars not capable of accepting 350kW, the 350kW chargers will give you the fastest charge your EV can accept.

DC fast chargers offer the fastest charging speeds available today. Current DC fast chargers supported by Electrify America include the Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors and CHAdeMO connectors. The brand of electric vehicle (EV) you drive will determine which plug you can use.

Alternating current (AC) chargers, referred to as Level 2 (L2) and Level 1 (L1) chargers, are typically found in home and workplace settings, as well as in many public locations. These chargers will charge an EV at speeds from 3.3kW to 19kW, and are usually plugged in overnight at home, or during the day at a workplace charger.

Installation

Customers choosing to have a professional electrician install their new Level 2 charger can choose among three different installation packages offered by Qmerit to select the one that best fits their installation needs. Custom installation services are also available. Packages begin at $695.

Electrify America Home charging station performance review

The docking station is a nice feature and it took only 20 minutes to set up (EZPZ) drill 3 screws and plug in. The docking station has a quick release handle that enables you to very easily remove the charger whenever needed. Body of the charger serves as the holder for the electrical cord providing a very clean organized look.

Giovanni Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of Electrify America, commented on the milestone:

“With our rapid station deployment, we are on track to have 800 charging stations with about 3,500 chargers open or under development by the end of this year – delivering on our commitment to make EV driving easier and more accessible. We’re proud to be on the forefront of expanding the nation’s EV charging infrastructure and are excited to see our continued growth, as we help meet EV demand and climate priorities set by the Administration.”

As well as in Montana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Washington state:

“Additionally, Electrify America will open more stations later this year in Montana, Minnesota and New Hampshire – states with a smaller charging station presence – as the network grows in the Plains, Mountain and New England regions. The company is also planning a significant expansion later this year in Washington state, where the legislature has recently passed a bill setting a goal that all model year 2030 and later light-duty vehicles sold, purchased or registered in the state be EVs.”

Along with the new milestone, Electrify America is also announcing new stations coming to Hawaii, South Dakota, Wyoming and Vermont:

“Electrify America will build on this momentum by adding stations in Hawaii, South Dakota, Wyoming and Vermont to the network for the first time by early 2022 – meeting driver demand for more charging stations throughout different areas of the country. The new states will bring Electrify America’s presence to 47 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.”

Those new stations are coming just as many new EV models are coming to the US.
