Price – Ecovacs DEEBOT OZMO 920 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping robot

At just shy of £500, it’s not the cheapest robot vacuum cleaner on the market but it strikes a good balance between price and performance.

In the UK, you can usually buy the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 920 for £499.98 from Amazon. Right now, it’s on sale for £379.98. While it’s hard to call something that’ll cost you almost £400 a steal, this is a good price for a very good cleaner. In the US, it’ll set you back $699.99 from Amazon.com.

Ecovacs DEEBOT OZMO 920 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping robot review

Design

Design-wise, the Ozmo 920 sticks close to the robot-vacuum blueprint: It measures 13.7 inches across and 3.7 inches high due to its laser turret, which employs Smart Navi 3.0 technology to navigate and create an interactive map of your floor plan, so you can customize cleanings.

Brush

Down under are a roller brush and a pair of spinning edge brushes. The Ozmo 920 also includes a direct suction option that involves removing the roller brush and replacing it with a special vent that allows the vacuum to suck up pet hair and other fibers without them getting tangled in the roller.

Dustbin

A relatively small 0.43-liter dustbin is housed beneath a lid on top of the vacuum, while a water reservoir for the mopping function is slotted in the back. The vacuum comes with a reusable microfiber mopping cloth and several disposable ones, along with a cloth plate to which they attach.

Mop

The mop function is as good as anything I’ve seen on a robot cleaner. It can vac and mop at once and it’s easy to set up the function – but I’m still not sold on the concept. In the end, it’s just not as effective as mopping it yourself, although it may give you a bit more time between proper cleans.

Cleaning mode

The 920 has two cleaning modes: normal and advanced. Because it maps your home, it cleans in a very logical way, unlike many robot vacuum cleaners, which can be maddening to watch. In advanced mode, it retains the map it makes, allowing you to name areas, set up custom cleaning and easily create virtual boundaries to prevent it vacuuming or mopping in one or more areas. People with larger homes can create two different maps for different floors.

Noise

The 920 has three power settings: quiet, standard and max. None of them are off-puttingly loud and quiet is quiet enough that you can forget about it, until it sneaks up and rams into your ankle. (Ecovacs states that its decibel level is 66dB.) I found that this setting was fine for most cleaning.

Battery life

The battery life will allow it to clean for 110 minutes, which was more than enough for my flat. People with two floors will probably need to recharge between them.

Installation

Like many robot vacuums, installation is not really an issue. You pull the vacuum from its packaging, and set it on its charger to fully juice. Once fully charged it should run easily for about two hours — and we found the robot was able to work for nearly that without needing to go back for a new charge.

Voice features with Alexa and Google Assistant

The Deebot is a chatty robot. It will tell you when it’s starting to charge, and even remind you to remove the cleaning plate for the mop when it needs to start charging. It’s also loud. Be aware.

But what many smart home owners will like is there is Alexa and Google Assistant control, which will help you start and stop the Deebot just by asking.

To add Alexa control:

  1. Register and open an account through the Ecovacs Home app.
  2. Add the Ecovacs Deebot skill to your Alexa app on your mobile device
  3. Sign into your Ecovacs account inside Alexa
  4. Say “Alexa, tell Deebot to clean.”

We found Alexa connected easily with Deebot, and even told us it would not start cleaning because the battery was low. You can also ask Alexa to stop having Deebot clean, or to go back to the charger.

To add Google Assistant control:

  1. Open the Google Home app on your home
  2. Then, click on Home Control under the Assistant tab.
  3. Click on the “+” button
  4. Click on Deebot and then log in to your Ecovacs account
  5. Then you can ask, “Hey Google, tell Deebot to start cleaning.”

The only problem here is both Google Assistant, Alexa and Deebot will audibly respond to you — that’s a lot of talking.

Apps

In the Ozmo 920’s case, you’ll also want to download the Ecovacs Home app (which works for both iOS and Android devices) so you can take advantage of its smarts. Once you create an account with the app, you can easily add your robot by scanning a QR code, and then linking it to your home Wi-Fi.

Here in the app is where you can schedule the Deebot to clean, and set a ‘do not disturb’ so it doesn’t work during the middle of the night.

What’s nice about the Deebot Ozmo 920 is you can use this as a dumb machine too — meaning, you don’t need the app to get the vacuum working. A button on the top is all you need to press to get the robot to start whirling around the floor vacuum and wiping down the surfaces. And you can empty the bin right from the top — which is a nice feature as you don’t have to turn the vacuum over to get at what it’s swept up from your floor.

Ecovacs DEEBOT OZMO 920 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping robot performance review

Rugs vs wood floors

Unlike other robot vacuums we’ve tested, the Deebot Ozmo 920 had a hard time getting over rugs — and then vacuuming them. In fact, it often couldn’t make it across the lip of the shag white rug we have in our living room. When it finally did, though, it did a thorough job as long as the vacuum was on the highest setting.

Dog hair

Like many robot vacuums, I find the device struggles against our dog hair issue — mainly with my Labrador Retriever’s hair. In the case of the Deebot, I didn’t find it delivered a poor result, just not always fantastic.

When the Deebot hit the hair dead on — in other words, driving immediately over it — the suction was easily strong enough to pick it up, if it was on the highest setting. The problem would be side hits, where the brush would then sweep it into piles, and deposit these mounds throughout the house. We’ve seen this before with other robot vacuums.

Alternate of Ecovacs DEEBOT OZMO 920 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping robot

The Deebot Ozmo 920 is a good robot vacuum/mop, but it is not a cheap one. At $700, it’s probably best reserved for folks with larger two- and three-story homes who can best take advantage of the multi-floor mapping, area cleaning, and other advanced features. If you have more hard flooring than carpet, you might consider a dedicated robot mop like the iLife Shinebot W400 , which offers plenty of custom cleaning options, plus more dirt agitation than any currently available vacuum/mop combo.
