Compare Garmin Edge 1040 solar bundle vs Garmin Edge 1040

Of the Garmin GPS bike computers, the Edge 1040 Solar has the longest battery life.Your cycle computer’s battery life is increased with the Power GlassTM solar charging lens, which also lengthens the time you can ride.

In demanding use cases, get up to 45 hours or up to 100 hours in battery saver mode. In power saver mode, it can add up to 42 minutes per hour during daylight rides, and in demanding use cases, it can add up to 20 minutes per hour (assuming continuous 75,000 lux conditions during daytime riding).

Furthermore, the Edge 1040 Solar model offers 64 GB of storage instead of just 32 GB! This takes us to its second significant distinction: maps for Australia/New Zealand, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), and North America are included with the Edge 1040 Solar! However, you can still get any of these for free if you purchase the 1040 base!

But even without choosing the solar-charging option, the Edge 1040 has a respectable battery life! In demanding use circumstances, it provides up to 35 hours (as opposed to 24 hours in the 1030 Plus!). Moreover, it lasts up to 70 hours in battery-saving mode!

In either case, new features like Real-Time Stamina, Power Guide, and more give your Garmin cycling GPS extra juice for longer training sessions!

Garmin Edge 1040 solar bundle review

Design

It measures 59.3 x 117.6 x 20 mm, slightly bigger than the Edge 1030, which measures 58 x 114 x 19 mm. aerodynamic and sleek design with a 3.5-inch touch screen that is snappy and always easy to see. Your Edge is securely mounted in the new metal mount.

Along with out-of-front and stem mounts, Garmin supplies a tonne of accessories with the Edge 1040 Solar, my personal favourite of which is a silicone casing.

The interface is fully touch-based, with the exception of three physical buttons for power, ride start/stop, and lap start/stop. Even though the Edge 830 and Edge 1030 Plus are not the same, this is all quite similar to those devices.

Screen

Even in my preferred configuration of seven data fields, everything is bright, crisp, and easy to see because to the screen’s 282×470 pixel resolution.

Garmin Edge 1040 solar bundle Setup

Since I already use Garmin, all of my data was easily transferred from the Garmin Connect app, making setup of the gadget quite easy for me. It’s a fairly simple process even if you haven’t used it before; just select your language and follow the on-screen instructions.

At first, I had some trouble connecting it to my phone; I had to go through the connection cycle several times before it worked, but I’m not sure if this was a problem with my phone or the Edge.

Features in Garmin Edge 1040 solar bundle

GPS unit

To get the most out of your training and racing, you need a GPS unit or bike computer. These devices provide vital statistics that let you know your heart rate, cadence, effort, and much more, in addition to helping you keep track of time and distance. All of this and more is included in the Garmin Edge 1040, making it the last device you’ll probably ever want to purchase. After travelling a great distance together, this is my opinion.

Stamina

The two components of the extended training plan are the capacity to generate a power guide and real-time stamina. Both of these methods of pacing throughout a ride are essentially the same; stamina is more suited for racing, while power guide is more applicable to solitary endeavours. The stamina panel shows you how much work you are putting in and how long you can continue.

You can see your stamina start to diminish and turn red while you are competing with someone up a hill, for instance. This and the MPA measurement provided by Xert are extremely comparable. Using the same information, power pacing divides a ride into multiple segments according to the level of difficulty you choose. This is ideal for a triathlon or time trial.

Mapping

While the Garmin routing is quite simple, I’ve discovered that updating bridleways and footpaths is still a task when cycling on gravel. Using it to map out a ride around my new favourite rural spots, I ended up in the middle of a ploughed field where I think a trail once stood a few years ago. But Garmin is not alone in this; I’ve had comparable difficulties with various map services, particularly in less-traveled regions.

Mountain climbing

By far my favourite Garmin feature is ClimbPro, which displays precise climb information as you ride it, including your position on the climb and the amount of elevation, grade, and distance left to reach the summit. The ClimbPro colouring is further enhanced by the Edge 1040 to provide greater detail and distinct gradients on the climbs.

Additionally, there is an automatic climbing screen that will function when a path is followed. The display will change to a color-coded view with details about the length and difficulty of a climb as it gets closer. In this case, Hammerhead has an edge because their climbing screen functions even in the absence of a loaded route. Wahoo provides climbing details as well, although screen switching is required.

Training

Gain insight into your overall effort2 and determine if you’re training efficiently, reaching a peak, or feeling strained by using novel signs like your HRV status, your recent exercise history, and your performance. Get race-ready with these training advice and daily workout suggestions. Additionally, see your full week’s worth of recommended workouts on your Edge device by accessing your Garmin ConnectTM smartphone app calendar. These programmes are tailored to your performance, recovery time, and forthcoming events.

Cycling

Garmin offers reliable equipment for commuters, roadies, gravel grinders, mountain bikers, triathletes, and adventurers. Our selection of riding accessories includes smart lights, power metres, rearview radars that alert you to oncoming traffic, and GPS cycle computers with mapping and performance monitoring tailored to bikes. Check out our indoor trainers if you want to bring your ride inside so you can train more effectively all year round.

Heat and altitude

Get ready for every situation. Check out your body’s reaction to temperature changes and altitude acclimatisation.

Eat and drink alerts

Learn what you need to know to keep going, mile after mile. When it’s time to eat or hydrate, Edge 1040 will let you know.

Garmin Edge 1040 solar bundle Battery life

Faster charging is possible with the USB C cable, a significant improvement over the mini-USB port that Garmin previously employed for charging. Does it really matter, though, if you’re only charging it once a month? A USB-A to USB-C cable is now included with the Edge 1040 series, allowing users to charge their rechargable lithium-ion battery.

Using a Garmin Charge battery pack for in-ride power is compatible with this cycling computer. Additionally, the Edge 1040/1040 Solar has an IPX7 water rating, meaning it can survive accidental immersion in water up to one metre for up to thirty minutes. This includes rain, snow, splashing and showering.

How to transfer activity profiles & sensors to Edge 1040/1040 Solar?

Indeed! Transferring your activity profiles, information, and sensors to your Edge 1040 Series GPS for cycling is a simple process! Obtain pre-populated, personalised ride profiles by using your sensors, ride kinds, or past Edge.

From there, you can use the Garmin ConnectTM smart device app on your compatible smartphone to manage your bicycle activity profiles directly. All of the current configurations are carried over.

You can transfer up to 30 sensors to your new device. In essence, the 1040/1040 Solar verifies all of the distinct actions and sensors you have utilised from all of your devices over the past year, together with the names you have assigned to them, and then deposits them into your new device. How practical!
