GMK NUC Box review

Build

Its gray gunmetal colour scheme with a silver ring will not please everyone but its metal body is refreshingly different.

Design

The NucBox from GMK is a compact mini PC running Windows 10 Home Edition that you can take anywhere with you. It is tiny at only 62mm x 62mm x 42mm (2.4 x 2.4 x 1.6 inches) and it weighs 125g. At 62 x 62 x 42mm (161 cubic centimeters or around half a can of your favourite fizzy drink) for a weight of 125g, it is positively tiny and will hold comfortably in one’s palm.

Ports

there is a slot for a TF card and a 35mm headphone jack. The top has a circular fan opening while you can find the power button (and a status light), a microSD card slot, an audio port, a USB Type-C connector (that doubles as a power port), a full size HDMI port (v2.0) and two USB 3.0 connectors.

Processor

Inside the NucBox is an Intel Celeron J4125 which is a quad-core, quad-thread processor with a base frequency of 2GHz, 4MB cache and a burst frequency of 2.7GHz; as such, it should be faster than the N-series Celeron (N4000, N4100, N4120) which is one of the foundational elements of many entry level laptops.

Graphics

Graphics performance sits in between the older UHD Graphics 620 and newer 10th gen Ice Lake Iris Plus G7 graphics. The latest 11th gen Tiger Lake Iris Xe solution is even faster, but also much more expensive. The extra horsepower over the UHD Graphics 620 is helpful for light editing and 4K output much like on the 2018 MacBook Pro 13. Keep in mind that the Iris Plus Graphics 655 hasn’t aged very well when compared to even the Radeon RX Vega series.

Storage

All models come with 8GB LPDDR4 memory (Micron), Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 (WiFi-5, 2×2 TR/RX streams with Bluetooth 4.2) and a Goke GK2301 SATA controller. The memory chip on the M.2 2242 SSD was rather intriguing; “29f64b2amcmg4” corresponds to a 256Gb part found in the Intel P4608 which is an enterprise-grade SSD. It is however labelled as C100 in Windows’ Device manager.

Power

The 24W (12v2A) power supply unit has about the same footprint as the NucBox but is thinner, similar to a smartphone charger.

Noise

A single ~45 mm fan pulls in cool air from the bottom and expels hot air from the rear. It’s almost always quiet when idling on desktop, but low loads like browsing or video streaming will quickly induce a steady fan noise of 29.1 dB(A) against a silent background of 25.6 dB(A).

Can you do GMK NUC Box Upgrade

Four Philips screws are hidden underneath the rubber feet for relatively easy servicing. Once inside, users will see 1x M.2 2280, 1x 2.5-inch SATA III bay, and 2x DDR4 SODIMM slots. The cable for the 2.5-inch SATA III drive comes disconnected by default.

GMK NUC Box Performance review

For synthetic benchmarks, CrystalDiskMark recorded 441MB/s and 333MB/s for read and write speeds, respectively. This isn’t anywhere near NVMe levels of storage performance but is considerably faster than mechanical hard drives. PCMark 10 came in at 1,572, which is about in line with expectations for the Celeron J4125. Likewise with Geekbench 5, resulting in 434 and 1,318 for single and multi-core testing.

  • Passmark: 1345
  • Passmark CPU: 2668
  • CPU-Z: 210 (single-thread); 847 (multi-thread)
  • Geekbench: 415 (single-core); 1350 (multi-core); 1652 (compute)
  • CrystalDiskMark: 536MBps (read); 420MBps (write)
  • Cinebench CPU: 560
  • Novabench: 748
  • Atto: 534MBps (read, 256mb); 421MBps (write, 256mb)
  • Windows Experience Index: 4.5

This PC can be connected through Wi-Fi which makes it an ideal set up for using our projector outside this summer. It has a micro SD slot which is convenient for file transfers. Runs on windows 10 which is convenient. Easy to hook up wireless mouse and Bluetooth keyboard as well as USB for the monitor.

I was very impressed with how fast everything goes on the desktop, the web browser, and it plays my plex movies perfectly where I do the HD streaming for that. The amount of space of 512gb is also impressive where I have more than enough room for all my pics and videos to show too.

After initial set up and update, this NucBox boots really fast and can drive my 3K LG ultra-wide in HDMI in 85Hz, which looks really colorful and bright. Can handle YouTube 4K play and local media/movie playing super smoothly. As for office works and web browsing it’s a breeze. So far, the only thing I found it’s its the cooling fan noise, Fan comes on and ff often and abruptly, due to the small size of PC and its fan, it’s a bit of on the high pith and audible.
