Instant Vortex Pro 9-in-1 air fryer 10 quart reviews
The Instant Vortex Plus looks good. It has a compact design, a stainless-steel front and an easy-to-navigate touchscreen panel up top. The door feels wobbly, but that’s because it’s removable. Release a latch inside the frame, and you can remove the door for cleaning. That’s great for cleaning up crumbs. Aesthetics are important to us, and this machine has a sleek, modern look that we wouldn’t mind seeing on our countertop every day. Users love the shiny black look.
Pre-set cooking mode
The Vortex Plus’ control panel is pretty intuitive, but only includes buttons for the Air Fry, Roast, Broil, Bake, Reheat, and Dehydrate modes. Rotisserie is built into the roast function and can be turned on and off in that mode. All of the cooking modes have pre-programmed temperatures and time, but these are easily adjusted on the panel. I did miss the “manual” function that’s on my Instant Pot, but this at least takes the guesswork out of things.
The Vortex comes with a few accessories, including three pans that function as racks (two vented roasting pans and one flat drip pan), a rotisserie basket, and two rotisserie forks. The instruction manual suggestions you line the drip pan with foil and, yes, you should absolutely do that.
Lesser sound than a microwave
The first thing we noticed was the serious cooking power. The Instant Vortex Pro 9-in-1 air fryer 10 quart got food crispier than most of the other air fryers we’ve tried. Batches of store-bought and homemade fries cooked evenly, quickly and got super crunchy without much hassle. With this power does come some noise. But while this air fryer does make a noticeable whirring sound when turned on, it’s not louder than a microwave.
Considerable Basket size
One of the biggest downsides to many air fryers is the size of the basket. Most only have room for two chicken breasts or a couple of servings of fries (or the teeniest amount of zucchini chips). The Vortex’s 6-quart capacity has room for double that. We were able to air fry a whole pound of chicken, as opposed to the usual half-pound other fryers can handle. This means you can cut down on your batch cooking and get your food to the table faster.
Remember the first time you used an Instant Pot? Yeah, this sort of like that, but turned down a notch or two. The Instant Vortex has four pre-programmed settings to air fry, bake, roast and reheat similar to the Instant Pot’s seven settings. The caveat here is the Vortex only has eight buttons, four of which are those programs, plus Start, Cancel, Time and Temp. The dial in the center of the screen easily allows you to adjust the temperature in 5-degree intervals and the text is large and easy to read. Even if you’re someone who hates reading manuals, we have a feeling you’ll be able to figure this one out.
How to set up Instant Vortex Pro 9-in-1 air fryer 10 quart?
The Instant Vortex is basically ready to go right out of the box. If you’re going to use the Air Fry or Bake settings first, all you have to do is remove the plastic and styrofoam packaging, insert the cooking trays and the drip pan, and then complete a test run which simply involves running the machine for 20 minutes. Once that’s done, you’re ready to cook.
How is the test performance?
Air frying: The Instant Vortex Plus shines here, cooking food evenly and quickly in its 3-quart basket. Frozen chicken nuggets came out crispy outside, moist inside, in just 15 minutes. Frozen chicken wings took 30 minutes to bring to deliciousness. Shoestring fries were crispy and golden in just 18 minutes.
Roasting and rotisserie: No need to run out to the grocery store for a roasted chicken when the Vortex can do a terrific job. Using the rotisserie spit, we roasted a chicken and our 4-pounder turned out juicy, tender, and crispy brown in 50 minutes.
Reheating: Impressive. Our single serving of frozen lasagna was evenly heated after cooking for 15 minutes.
Baking: The Vortex misses the sweet spot here. Our first batch of four sugar cookies turned out golden on the outside, but raw inside. We baked another batch a bit longer, and the cookies got darker on the outside, as you would expect, but still had raw spots inside. That’s even when we covered the cookies with aluminum foil, as the manual recommends. The Vortex did a better job baking corn muffins, which were uniform in color and done inside.
Broiling: The Vortex isn’t so hot at this task. We popped some burgers in and hit the broil button, but they came out more baked than broiled.
Dehydrating: The Vortex didn’t disappoint in this test, but as with most dehydrators, you’ll have to wait a long time to reap the benefits: We used the dehydrate function for four thinly sliced kiwis, and got dry, flavorful fruit, but only after 6 long hours.
