Samsung 32-inch G5 Odyssey gaming monitor with 1000R curved screen review

Share

Samsung Odyssey G7 sports a 2560 x 1440 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, VA panel, 1000R curvature and even some DisplayHDR 600 functionality. It has a large screen and high resolution, great for playing atmospheric games like RPGs. Its input lag is exceptionally low, and it supports variable refresh rate technology to reduce screen tearing. Motion handling is good, as it has a high refresh rate and quick response time to make fast motion look clear and buttery smooth. Sadly, it has terrible ergonomics and sub-par viewing angles, so it isn’t the best option for co-op gaming. Get more in Samsung 32-inch G5 Odyssey gaming monitor with 1000R curved screen review.

Samsung 32-inch G5 Odyssey gaming monitor with 1000R curved screen review

Build Quality

The Samsung Odyssey G5 is also made mostly of plastic, but it feels solid and reliable overall while wobbling is minimal. There are no cosmetic defects on the monitor and its plastic panels don’t feel thinner compared to its premium siblings. The only weakness in this aspect is the hinge on the stand which isn’t firm enough to hold the monitor permanently when it is angled downward.

Stand

The stand is moderately sturdy and has a good range of motion, including height, tilt, pivot and swivel adjustment. The level of height adjustment is quite decent for a large 32-inch panel, and you can use this monitor in a portrait orientation

Wall mount

  • Wall Mount VESA 75×75

The back of the monitor is made out of textured plastic. All the inputs are bottom-facing, and there’s a passthrough at the top of the stand for cable management. You don’t need any tools to set up the stand; it just clicks into place.

Design

It weighs 9.7 lbs (4.4 kg) without stand and  9.9 lbs (4.5 kg) including stand. Its curve radius is 1000R. From the front, the Samsung Odyssey G5 looks similar to its bigger sibling, the Samsung Odyssey G7, with thin borders on three sides and a wide V-shaped stand. However, the back is very different, as it looks noticeably cheaper due to its small basic stand. It also lacks the RGB lighting that’s present on the G7.

1000R

The big elephant in the room is that curve: 1000R. This is almost, but not quite, twice as curved as the more standard 1800R curve that’s used by most other curved monitors. Even compared to some newer 1500R options, the 1000R curve is much more noticeable and obvious.

Display

The Samsung Odyssey G5 has a great resolution, and it comes in a 27 inch and a 32 inch size. While the 32 inch model might provide a more immersive gaming experience, the pixel density is a bit low, especially if you plan on using the monitor for work or like to sit up close.

  • Screen Diagonal 27.0 inches
  • Screen Area 310 sq inches
  • Native Resolution 2560 x 1440
  • Aspect Ratio 16:9
  • Megapixels 3.7 MP
  • Pixel Density  109 PPI

Ports

For ports, the Odyssey G7 includes two DisplayPort connectors and HDMI 2.0. We feel the lack of HDMI 2.1 is a bit of a miss. There’s also a 2-port USB hub and an audio output jack.

HDR Color gamut

Samsung hasn’t indicated what percentage of the HDR color gamut the monitor is supposed to cover. Due to the way we measure the DCI P3 coverage, our measurement is likely lower than most other reviewers. We measure it by sending a Rec. 2020 signal, but unlike most reviewers, we limit the colors to the DCI P3 primaries. This results in a lower but arguably more accurate measurement.

Refresh rate

The Samsung G5 Odyssey supports FreeSync natively to reduce screen tearing. It’s compatible with NVIDIA’s G-SYNC as well, but it only works over a DisplayPort connection.

  • Native  144 Hz
  • Max Refresh Rate  144 Hz
  • Variable Refresh Rate  Yes
  • FreeSync  YesG-SYNC  Compatible (Tested)
  • VRR Maximum  144 Hz
  • VRR Minimum  < 20 Hz
  • VRR Supported Connectors DisplayPort, HDMI

On-Screen Display (OSD)

Samsung 32-inch G5 Odyssey gaming monitor with 1000R curved screen review

During testing, we noticed that the monitor’s OSD doesn’t reflect the active refresh rate, it only shows the maximum refresh rate. This means that even if you set the refresh rate in the graphics card’s control panel to 60Hz, it would still show 144Hz in the on-screen menu.

Samsung 32-inch G5 Odyssey gaming monitor with 1000R curved screen performance review

For gaming, you’ll hardly find any fault with the 32-inch Odyssey G5’s gaming performance. Both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility work equally well, running at 144Hz with HDR through the DisplayPort input. The Tomb Raider hits 139 frames per second (fps) a few times with sustained speeds around 135 fps. To that, add a super-fast panel response and you have fluid motions and input lag completely free of artifacts. It other sibling, the Samsung Odyssey G7 maxes out at 240Hz frame rates, and on both monitors, that extra height really draws you into the game.

The Samsung Odyssey G5’s extreme curve a significant asset, not only when it comes to gaming, but for general use too. While a screen with a 21:9 or 32:9 cover will cover even more of a user’s peripheral vision, the height of a 32-inch monitor really draws you closer while providing a natural view of workday tasks. You can place documents in the center screen, while balancing utilities off the sides. In fact, you’re able to see a full page in word processor or 60 rows of a spreadsheet.

When you engage HDR, you get a rare treat. Samsung’s ultra-curved monitor does HDR really well, with effective selective dimming. You may not readily see the light level change in practice, but you will definitely see the extra dynamic range. Its blacks are very deep and well-detailed, and highlights pops, thanks to the high peak brightness. Frame rates in Call of Duty: WII just dropped a little during testing, due to the additional HDR processing load. However, speeds were sustained around 129fps with peaks in the 132fps.

Alternate of Samsung 32-inch G5 Odyssey gaming monitor with 1000R curved screen

Gigabyte G27QC

The Gigabyte G27QC is better than the Samsung Odyssey G5. The G27QC has a higher contrast ratio, quicker response time, and a slightly higher refresh rate. It also has better ergonomics and gets brighter. However, the Odyssey G5 has a Black Frame Insertion feature to improve motion clarity.

Samsung Odyssey G7

The Samsung Odyssey G7 is significantly better than the Samsung Odyssey G5. The G7 has a better contrast ratio, higher refresh rate, and much faster response time. It also has a better SDR and HDR color gamut, and it gets a lot brighter. On the other hand, the G5 has built-in speakers and is much cheaper.

Dell S2721DGF

The Dell S2721DGF is much better than the Samsung Odyssey G5 overall. The Dell has better gaming performance due to its higher refresh rate, faster response time, and lower input lag. It also has wider viewing angles, higher peak brightness, and significantly better ergonomics. However, the Samsung’s VA panel has a better contrast ratio, and it has a Black Frame Insertion feature to improve motion clarity.

The AOC CQ27G2 is much better than the Samsung Odyssey G5. The AOC has significantly better ergonomics, faster response time, and lower input lag, especially when playing at 60Hz. However, the Samsung provides better visibility in well-lit rooms due to its higher peak brightness and better reflection handling.

ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV

The ASUS ProArt Display PA278QV is much better than the Samsung Odyssey G5; however, they aren’t intended for the same use. The ASUS is a budget monitor for content creators with superb ergonomics and wide viewing angles. It also has a faster response time, but gaming feels smoother and more responsive on the Samsung due to its higher refresh rate.

ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD

The ViewSonic VX2758-2KP-MHD is much better than the Samsung Odyssey G5. The ViewSonic has a much faster response time, higher peak brightness, and its IPS panel provides much wider viewing angles.
