How effective is Sterillium hand sanitizer alcohol content?
Disinfectant makes use of the better alcohol (Propanol) achieving bacterial reduction as high as 99.99% as compared to sanitizers (Ethanol). Both can achieve bacterial reduction upon contact (in 15 to 30 seconds) but sanitizers lack the sustained effect of disinfectants which can last as long as 3 to 5 hours. Sanitizers do not contain agent for sustained effect thus there is an immediate regrowth of bacteria after the initial contact reduction.
Disinfectants on the other hand contain an agent like Mecetronium Ethyl Sulphate as in Sterillium which locks on the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum) for sustained bacterial reduction as long as 3 to 5 hours. Which one is better – alcohol based handrubs (Sterillium) or Povidone-Iodine based Surgical Hand Disinfection?
Yes. Alcohol based handrubs are proven to be more effective because of its broad spectrum of activities, persistent and residual effect, dermatological effect and convenience of use. The process of scrubbing has not been proven to be more effective in terms of killing microorganisms in the hands. In fact, this mechanical method causes micro lesions which then leads to more growth of bacteria in the hands.
