Design
7.5 by 10.6 by 2.6 inches (HWD) is how big its 10.1-inch, 1,920 by 1,200 LCD is. The only physical controls are a tiny, touch-sensitive control strip that is located on the top edge. The Carver appears like a lovely frame you may purchase for a print photo because of its textured, grooved plastic.
It is more solid due to its sturdier base rather than depending on a flimsy stand, and all you need to do to assemble it is plug in the power connection. With no complicated kickstands to deal with, this innovative freestanding design makes it simple to place in confined spaces.
Connection
The frame, which can only be used in landscape configuration and can display portrait photos in pairs side by side, is powered by an AC adaptor and a special connection. Though there are some restrictions, the frame can also show videos. Rather than using a more common type of power chord, such as USB-C or Micro USB, the Carver has its own special one, and it requires a plug to operate.
Control
Touch bars on top of Aura frames allow you to operate basic operations; extra options and setup are available through the Aura smartphone app. Furthermore, compared to the Aura Mason, the Carver’s narrow top makes it simpler to locate the touch bar.
The frame boasts several cool features, such touch-sensitive strips that allow you to swipe forward and backward to mark your favorite photographs. We advise going gently when using them because they require some patience to work.
Display
Carver has a 10.1-inch panel that allows for tack-sharp 224 pixels per inch (PPI) images that are easily visible from all angles. It displays 2.3-megapixel HD-quality photos in a clean and colorful manner.
Although the Carver and Mason have somewhat different resolutions (1280 x 800 and 1600 x 1200, respectively), we didn’t notice a noticeable difference in the clarity of the images. It still has a crisp appearance, great contrast, and vibrant color display.
Aspect ratio
Although the Carver has a 16:10 aspect ratio, we discovered that no guests were lost because of the wider ratio, which made all of the expert wedding images fit on the screen. Additionally, the aspect ratio of the two vertical photographs that were displayed was 4:5.
Light sensor
In order to block out sunlight, the sensor increased the screen’s brightness. In addition, compared to the Mason’s sensor, it had a tendency to detect light from a different room. For instance, when these frames were in a dining room and light spilled in from the kitchen, the Carver remained on but the Mason did not.
Audio & video
Videos can be played on any Aura frame, including the Carver, and they can be uploaded in the same manner as images. The main drawback is that videos cannot be uploaded automatically. When a vertical video is put into Photo Match mode on the Carver, it aligns it with either another vertical video or a portrait-oriented photo.
It features an integrated speaker that can play the audio track from a clip, and in our tests, the speaker was loud and clear enough for us to hear background noise or music in addition to speech.
Sound is customizable for each movie; to activate it, simply tap the touch-sensitive strip on the frame. All replays of a particular video that you’ve enabled will have sound; however, the next video that the Carver plays (assuming you haven’t disabled it previously) will be muted. When a movie plays, you can adjust the volume from the app or on the screen, but Aura retains the level you choose.
Photo storage
The Aura Frames software imports images from cloud services like iCloud or Google Photos, as well as from the camera roll on your smartphone or tablet. Carver shows every picture in a well chosen slideshow for ten minutes by default after pairing with that app. But before moving on to the next one, it can display a photo for as little as 15 seconds or as long as 24 hours.
Photo sharing
Using a new approach, Intelligent Photo Pairing fills the widescreen frame with aesthetically pleasing portrait shots that, in our tests, appear to go well together. The Aura Frame program also handles image management, removing duplicates, screening out fuzzy images, and cropping photos as needed to fit the 10.1-inch screen.
Setup
Configuring the Carver (and other Aura frames) was easier in our tests than it was with any other frame. All you have to do is download the Aura app, couple your phone with the frame, and use your phone to link the frame to your Wi-Fi network.
You can phone family and friends to invite them to submit their own photos, which is one of the few steps between turning on the device and adding photos. (More on that later.) You can even configure the Carver to be a gift for someone else. Additionally, the app upgrades the frame’s firmware automatically, which could cause a little delay in the setup process.
Privacy
The photos that are displayed on the company’s frames—the Carver and the other selections in this tutorial included—are saved on its servers once you upload them. We received assurances from Aura that images are always encrypted and that it never sells or shares client information for marketing purposes. You may completely erase any images you remove from the app from the cloud servers as well.

We bought a landscape frame for photos and videos of grandkids and it was great, we each have access to load photos. So we bought another one that we can display portrait or landscape for our trips we have taken. I was uploading from iPad or iPhone (google photos) but I had to edit the date on every photo as it saved as the current date on the app. So I decided to try a different way. Using the uploader on the computer. First I downloaded a group of photos from Google photos to a folder on my computer, unzipped to the folder, then dragged and dropped them all to the uploader. Now it is uploaded and the date and location was kept, so I don’t need to go into each one on the app to edit the date if I want them displayed in chronological order. Then I just delete photos from the computer folder…and repeat. Much better! We use one frame landscape and the other Portrait. The grandkids and parents love the frame when they visit, especially the videos. Also the great feature of shutting off when the lights are off is a nice feature.

One of the sharpest screens available can be seen on the Nixplay 2K Smart Digital Photo Frame. In our tests, it outperformed the reflective coating in terms of brightness and detail, with deep blacks and rich colors. We also thought that the 9.7-inch size found a decent balance, since the frame fits on most shelves and still allows photographs enough room to be seen.
It has a flexible stand that can be used in either portrait or landscape orientation. Another helpful alternative is to wall-mount. We did discover that the metal-effect bezel is extremely reflective and attracts fingerprints, so we advise going with the matte black model instead.
Similar to previous Nixplay frames, there are many of customization choices available in the settings menu, ranging from changing the motion sensor’s sensitivity to changing the frame’s color.
