Price

Prices range from £1,249 for the Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD to £1,599 for the Core i7 with 16GB and a 1TB SSD. I was sent the latter model for this review. If you want a bigger screen, the new 17in LG Gram costs an extra £100 to £150.

The Samsung has a fabulous 15.6in AMOLED display, weighs a mere 1.05kg, and is available with a similar lineup of internal components as the LG. The one thing it lacks is resolution: where the LG Gram 16’s display is a 2,560 x 1,600 unit, the Galaxy Book Pro 15.6 has only a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) screen.

LG Gram 15Z95P laptop 15.6 review

Build

The Gram’s full-metal body is made of nano carbon magnesium that LG says is tougher than the shell of conventional laptops. To back up the sturdiness claims, LG ran it through seven military-grade durability tests including ones for shock and vibration.

Design

Lightweight 15.6-inch laptops are a rarity to begin with, so the fact that LG is able to make one that’s less than 2.5 pounds with excellent performance and even better battery life is pretty amazing.

Ports

In terms of ports, the LG gram 15 is nearly a carbon copy of previous gram models. On the right side, there’s two USB Type-A ports with USB 3.1 speeds, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, a microSD card slot, and the Kensington lock port if you want to keep the laptop locked at a desk or something without it getting stolen.

On the left, another USB 3.1 Type-A port, plus a Type-C port that can carry Thunderbolt 3 and charge the laptop, an HDMI port, and a barrel type charging port, which is sadly still the default charging method for this laptop.

Display

The Gram 15 features a Full HD 15.6-inch panel with a pixel density of 144 PPI. The IPS panel is made by LG Display. We measured a peak brightness of 310 cd/m², which is a rather decent result. The display of the Samsung Galaxy Book Ion achieved a brightness of 467 cd/m². On battery power, the brightness falls to 299 cd/m².

Web Camera

The web camera has a 0.9-MP (1280×720) sensor, which produces washed-out and blurry images. In low-light environments, there is also a whole lot of noise. The image quality is on a very low level, which is characteristic of today’s laptop cameras. The colour performance of the Gram 15’s webcam is particularly poor. Here, the cheaper Honor MagicBook is significantly better.

Memory & storage

There are two configurations of 2021’s Gram 15: One with the Core i7-1165G7 (4 x 2.8 – 4.7 GHz) and the other with the Core i5-1135G7 (the so-called business edition). Both models have 16 GB of RAM. However, the Core i5 variant has a 512 GB SSD, whereas the Core i7 model features a 1 TB SSD.

Graphics Card

The Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 (96EUs) achieves normal results in the synthetic benchmarks. There was no throttling which we saw in the CPU benchmarks. However, in real games, the iGPU throttled, even at low settings. Here the Iris Xe Graphics G7 (96EUs) performed 30 to 45% worse than in other devices.

Keyboard & touchpad

The touchpad is solid: It’s smooth and responsive without any jumpiness. The touchpad measures 11.1×6.9 cm (4.37×2.72 in). The touchpad works well. It responds quickly and reliably to inputs.

The keyboard is decent, but if you hammer hard when typing like I do, it doesn’t make for the most comfortable experience. The keys feel stable and provide good tactile feedback. The actuation point is clear, and the keys offer a very decent amount of travel distance. When typing, the keyboard deck exhibits some flex.

SD Card Reader

The microSD card reader is located on the right side and operates at USB 3.0 speeds. Inserted SD cards stick out only slightly from the slot.

Battery life in LG Gram 15Z95P laptop 15.6

This massive 72Wh cell is estimated to provide upwards of 19 hours of uptime, according to LG. With our typical workflow of browsing the web, chatting on Slack, typing up documents, and streaming a little bit of media, we typically saw 8-9 hours of uptime at 100 percent brightness. That means it’s built for a full-on workday, which makes it a great option for productivity.

In our video rundown test, in which we constantly stream a Netflix movie at 100 percent brightness, the LG Gram 15.6-inch lasted for 9 hours, 14 minutes. With locally-stored video, you’re sure to get a whole lot more out of it.

Audio

The two speakers are located under the wrist rest (close to the sides). The speakers perform best when the laptop is placed on an even, firm surface, from which the sound can be easily reflected. The design of the small drivers has changed, but the large chambers still remain.

WiFi connection

The connection always seemed speedy and downloads ran at a steady clip. Testing it on a home Wi-Fi network during peak evening hours, we saw a download speed of about 30Mbps and an upload speed of 13Mbps. We tested the network on an iPhone XS Max immediately after and saw comparable speeds there, as well. You can connect to both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks with ease.

Energy Consumption

The power consumption has not changed significantly when compared to the predecessor. The LG Gram 15 draws 2.9 to 11.5 W when idle. Under load, the system consumes 29 W, which is 2 W lower than the Ice Lake-based predecessor.

LG Gram 15Z95P laptop 15.6 Customer review

Probably the best all around laptop available

This computer is fast, lightweight, easy to use and the fingerprint reader is flawless. The screen is sharp and can be set for almost any environment. I love that it has a HDMI out to easily connect to tv,s when traveling and USB c so it can be charged with just a USB cable. There might be more powerful laptops out there but if you don’t need the portability this offers you should be getting a desktop. This has more than enough speed and power to handle any task I have tried and I couldn’t be happier with it. Only downside I have found is that when typing my hand will sometimes rest on the track-pad but I will probably turn that off and use a separate mouse when I do a lot typing

Productivity, multimedia, and even a bit of gaming — the Dell XPS 15 can do it all — and do it well. Starting at $1,299, the XPS 15 offers an attractive, slim design that’s bursting with power.

The XPS 15 OLED is the best Windows laptop for power users who need to take their work (or play) on the road. Its attractive design screams luxe, the 3.5K OLED display is stunning, and the oversized touchpad would impress even a MacBook user. Combine those XPS staples with excellent performance from 11th Gen Intel and Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti chips and it’s easy to recommend this machine to students, business users or content creators, like photographers, videographers or graphics designers.

For those that aren’t fussed about the OLED display, Dell tends to use top-rate 1920 x 1200-pixel panels, so we recommend that anyone who cares about battery life opt for the FHD+ display.
