Is LG Gram good for gaming – (2022) 17Z90Q review

Build

This Gram is very light and thin despite its size, weighing in at just under 3 pounds (2.98 pounds to be exact), making it the ideal choice for carrying around in a backpack all day. On all sides, the bezels that surround the screen are very tiny. When you consider that LG was able to include a full HD webcam with IR capabilities and dual microphones on the top one, that is rather astounding.

Design

The LG Gram 17 (2022) includes a 17-inch screen and a chassis made of a relatively thin magnesium alloy that is just 0.7 inches thick. While that isn’t as slim as the Apple MacBook Air M2, which is 0.44 inches thick. The magnesium alloy chassis, which not only manages to shed pounds but also ounces, is largely responsible for that featherweight appeal.

Ports

The LG Gram 17 (2022) includes a 17-inch screen and a chassis made of a relatively thin magnesium alloy that is just 0.7 inches thick. While that isn’t as slim as the Apple MacBook Air M2, which is 0.44 inches thick. The magnesium alloy chassis, which not only manages to shed pounds but also ounces, is largely responsible for that featherweight appeal.

Processor & storage

The processor has been upgraded to the 12th Gen i7 1260P, which is substantially faster, along with quick LPDDR5 memory. A PCIe Gen 4.0 storage subsystem has also been added, and Windows 11 is now pre-installed as standard.

There are two PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD slots within the laptop, one of which is already filled with a Samsung PM9A1 SSD with a capacity of 1TB, 512GB, or 256GB, but the other is open to expansion.

Display & brightness

The LG Gram 17 (17Z90Q) has a gorgeous 17-inch WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600 pixels) display with tiny bezels that give the impression that the screen is much larger than it actually is. You won’t have any trouble using this Gram on the go because it isn’t a touchscreen and the colors seem accurate. While the 350 nits of brightness listed by LG for this display are respectable for an ultraportable, they fall short of that of devices like the Dell XPS 17 (504 nits), the MacBook Air M2 (489 nits), or even the Dell XPS 15 OLED (382 nits).

Keyboard and touchpad

The matte black keys feel pleasant to type on, even for lengthy work sessions, despite the fact that they tend to attract fingerprints. My huge hands like the extra room, and the fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the power button is a convenient addition.

A large 5.2 by 3.25 inch touchpad with complete gesture support and a smooth finish that is pleasant for all of your swiping and scrolling is also included with the Gram 17. Backlit keys and a numberpad are included, which is useful when working with spreadsheets or entering huge figures.

Audio

A Realtek chip handles audio, while a bundled program makes use of DTS:X Ultra technology. The down-firing speakers produce passable audio, but since they don’t have a built-in subwoofer like the Apple MacBook Pro M2, they don’t get very loud, even if they are sufficient to fill a medium-sized room.

Temperature

With the flagship Core i7-1260P, which is available in 16 and 17-inch variants and has four performance cores and eight efficiency cores, there are a total of 12 cores with clock rates of up to 4.7GHz. This was frequently reached in workloads with few threads, but in workloads with many threads, the CPU would quickly reach 90°C and slow down to 2GHz on its performance cores and 1,800MHz on its efficiency cores.

Is LG Gram good for gaming?

Without a discrete GPU the LG Gram 17 can’t play most demanding 3D games at anything approaching a reasonable framerate. Even in something a bit more sedate, like Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm, the Gram 17 could only hit 16 frames per second (fps) running the game’s graphical benchmark at its native 2,560 x 1,600 resolution. When we knocked the game down to 1080p, the Gram 17 could only manage a slightly better 20.2 fps.

How long is Is LG Gram battery life?

In its large frame, the LG Gram 17 (2022) conceals a respectable-sized battery. Although the Evo platform helps keep power demands low, the 17-inch display does require a relatively significant amount of power, and its 80 Whr battery is greater than what you’d find on most rival notebooks.

On a full charge, the Gram 17 lass can operate for more than 12 hours and 32 minutes (12:32) while continuously using Wi-Fi to browse the internet. With such strong performance, you shouldn’t need to plug the Gram 17 in to power it up after a full day of work or school.

Is LG Gram 17 faster than Alienware?

The LG Gram 17 laptop, which has a Core i7 processor, 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a 1TB NVMe SSD, is extremely quick. It won’t be as quick as the Alienware X15 R2 with a dedicated RTX 3070 Ti, even with an integrated GPU, but it should be adequate for casual gaming or playing AAA titles at low/medium settings.

With sustained read/write speeds of approximately 5GBps and over 6.3GBps, the Samsung SSD is also a quick SSD. The Dell XPS 17 is larger, heavier, and thicker in contrast, measuring 0.77 inches thick and weighing 4.87 pounds at launch.

Can you make video call with LG Gram 17?

In my opinion, the LG Gram 17 (2022)’s topmost bezel’s 1080p webcam does a wonderful job of catching color and detail in my kitchen during the numerous Google Meet and Zoom calls I had with it.

Is LG Gram good for gaming – (2022) 17Z90Q Performance review

With a Delta-E score of 0.26, our LG Gram 17 review unit performed admirably in our tests of color reproduction, attaining 171.1% of the sRGB color gamut and 121.2% of the DCI-P3 color spectrum (100% being the most accurate) (closer to 0 is better). That has more colors than either of the two 17-inch 4K laptops we previously tested: the Dell XPS 17 2022 (120% sRGB/85.1% DCI-P3) or the Alienware m17 R5 (107.5% sRGB/76.2% DCI-P3).

Notably, the Geekbench 5.4 multi-core CPU benchmarking test yielded a good score of 7,511 for our LG Gram 17 review device with its Intel Core i7-1260P CPU. They are designed to strike a compromise between performance and power consumption, which is why the more potent Intel Core i7-12700H CPU inside the Dell XPS 17 (2022) that we just reviewed performs better on the Geekbench 5.4 multi-core CPU test (to the tune of 13,714). Two distinct CPUs with two different amounts of power are produced by the same chipmaker using the same generation of chips.
