Pix-star vs Nixplay digital photo frame reviews

Design & Build

Pix-Star

the Pix-Star Wi-Fi digital frame has a simple and somber appearance. There’s no honeycomb design; neither is there any integrated power cables. Instead, you’ll find a simple stand with slim borders on the three sides. The bottom border is a tad thicker than the others and gives it an appearance of a smart speaker like the Echo Show. It measures around 10.6 x 1.1 x 7.8-inches and weighs around 1.57 pounds. That aside, this Pix-Star frame can double up as a table-top frame or you can mount it to the wall, thanks to the mounting holes at the back.

Nixplay

The Nixplay Smart Digital Picture Frame is a more lightweight option than the Aura Frames Sawyer. It’s constructed from black ABS plastic, and it’s designed to sit on a table, not hang on a wall. It’s available in four different screen sizes: 9.7 inches, 10.1 inches, 13.3 inches, and 15 inches.

Motion sensors

Pix-Star

Motion sensor automatically turns on/off the screen when you enter and exit the room. Wi-Fi enabled (2. 4 GHz only, 5 GHz network not supported). Set up in a couple of minutes. 8GB internal memory (around 30, 000 pictures), supports USB stick, SDHC and SDXC cards.

Nixplay

There’s a motion sensor on the front of the Nixplay, much like the one on the Sawyer. It will automatically turn on the screen when there is activity, and shut off when the room is empty. If you prefer manual controls, there’s a small control panel on the back of the frame. From there, you can manually switch between photos, or even temporarily pause on a single picture.

Family sharing & Alexa enabled – Pix-Star vs Nixplay

Pix-Star

Remotely view and manage the photos on your connected frames using the Pix-Star website account at no extra charge with no hidden fees, ever.

Send pictures from your frame to an individual or several email addresses directly from the frame.  Friends and family can share photos to and from the Pix-Star Wi-Fi frame from anywhere in the world. Display your social media photos by accessing online photos from Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, one drive, Flickr, Google Drive, Google Photos, 23Snaps and more.

Nixplay

If multiple family members have Nixplay frames, you can invite each-other to share to each-others’ frames. This is a great feature if you have relatives throughout the country. As a part of this feature, you can create different playlists for different purposes. Vacation photos and family photos, for example, can go in separate playlists. Create another one for your sister’s wedding, and so on.

The options are truly endless. Perhaps the best part of this feature is that you can create different playlists for different relatives. This makes sorting as easy as dragging and dropping a photo. The playlist features also work at home. Using the app, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant, just ask to see the playlist you want. You can even use voice controls to freeze a particular photo for a period of time.

Screen resolution – Pix-Star vs Nixplay

While both frames have an IPS display, the aspect ratio and the resolution are very much different. The Pix-Star frame has an XGA resolution of 1024×768 pixels, and it comes with an aspect ratio of 4:3. The latter gives it a slightly unconventional design when compared to traditional photo frames.

The same goes for the Nixplay Seed as well. With a resolution of 1280 x 800 and an aspect ratio of 16:10, the Seed photo frame produces a bright and sharp display.

Cloud service

Pix-Star

the Pix-Star photo frame sports almost the same feature. You can share photos and videos right from the app or via email.. Plus, it can also integrate with OneDrive and Google Drive (hence the name). You simply need to link your Pix-Star account to the cloud service you like and drop the photos there. At the same time, syncing is also great.

Nixplay

The dedicated app, which is compatible with both iOS and Android, lets you share photos, videos, and images to it directly. You can make a playlist for photos and have them display as a slideshow. The app has a simple and clean interface, and at the same time, it’s quite easy to use. And for the social media savvy, you can also pull photos from your Facebook and Instagram accounts as well as services like Google Photos, Dropbox, and Flickr.

While the resolution is lower than some other models of its size, the aspect ratio compensates by filling the entire frame with your image. A smart-fill option stretches images or you can opt to show photos as a collage with four to five images per screen with many transition options.
