At £100, the Renpho R3 GM171 is not short of competition. At that price, you’ll find multiple options such as the TaoTronics massage gun ,.. at £90, which comes with six massager heads and has a slightly large 2,600mAh battery. It’s also a little quieter than Renpho’s offering.

Theragun mini might be mini in name and size, but it’s not exactly mini in price: At $199, the Theragun Mini falls solidly into a mid-range category of massage guns. Sure, there are some that are way more expensive (like the Theragun Pro at almost $600), but you can definitely find one for cheaper (like the Sportneer Deep Tissue Massager at $89.99).

Theragun Mini is truly unique. It has a triangular shape which mirrors Therabody’s design language. The Mini comes with the standard ball attachment, whereas more expensive models come with a variety of other attachments. 

Design

It’s compact and lightweight. It measures 7.3 x 5.7 x 2.3 inches. This  the massage gun comes along with an assortment of five massage heads. There’s a chunky handgrip with a USB charging port at the base, and around at the back is a circular button that allows you to switch it on and pick a setting. This can be done by pressing the power button repeatedly to move through the five different modes. Holding the button for a few seconds will power down the device.

Theragun mini

The Mini is about half the size of its larger counterparts. It measures 5.4 x 4.3 x 1.6 (inches). It’s small and compact (as a mini should be). It weighs 1.43lbs. which is way lighter than any of the bigger guns. The distance the shaft and attachment extend from the gun and into your muscle.

It has an impressive five different massage heads (ball, “air-cushion”, fork, bullet and flat heads), each of which is aimed at a specific type of massage or part of the body. I found the air cushion head perfect for tender areas like the elbow and knee joints, which can be sensitive to the harder plastic massager heads.

While it only includes one attachment, the Theragun mini is compatible with all six attachment heads in the Pro, Elite and Prime series by Theragun, as well as any attachment heads from the previous generation G3PRO and G3 models (for example the previous large ball will work as well). You can also purchase any of the attachments heads ala carte online.

You’ll see five battery indicator lights at the bottom of the handle and a small blue light above the power button that indicates how rapidly you want the gun to oscillate, from 1,800rpm (one light) to 3,200rpm (five lights). 

Theragun mini

Turning it on requires a short hold of the on/off button, and pressing that same button changes the speed from its lowest setting on up to medium and high. Three lights sit atop the button to quickly alert you of what power level it’s currently set at.

5 speeds are provided for different muscle groups, aiding in sore muscle relief, relax and shape different muscle parts. Choosing from 5 different shaped massager heads, power on the device, you can start to relax your body parts.

it can deliver between 1,800 and 3,200 pulses per minute and boasts amplitude of 9mm. That means it’s more than capable of providing a good level of massage across the range. The medium torque brushless motor is very capable too, with a smooth power delivery. It’s very potent at the higher settings, and has a 10-minute auto shut-off limit, which is par for the course for this type of device.

Teragun mini

That reliable and effective performance is almost entirely attributed to how Theragun built the Mini. With three separate speed options of 1,750, 2,100, and 2,400 PPM, the Mini is anything but a watered-down version of the brand’s more advanced models.

In fact, each of the brand’s Fourth Generation massage guns offers speeds ranging from 1,750 to 2,400 PPMs, allowing the Mini to mostly stand toe-to-toe with its kin. Though the advanced models offer more custom PPM control within that range, the Mini still packs the same percussive punch — even if it lacks customization by only offering those exact three speeds.

Battery life & charging

It comes with a 2,500mAh battery that provides up to 80 minutes of usage per charge. The USB-C charging cable makes charging quick and easy, and once fully powered up, the Renpho R3 Mini Massage Gun can still deliver around six hours of continuous massage. That should be more than enough for most needs, outside a professional setting.

Theragun mini

The Mini’s battery is strong enough and will last up to 2-3 hours under normal usage. There’s an LED indicator next to the power button that will let you know how much juice you’ve got left.

We noticed that the battery drains if any kind of pressure is applied for a bit longer.

Renpho R3

While it’s easy to get carried away with the speed setting, I recommend starting with the lowest speed and then working your way up, as you find what speed setting works best for you. This can also vary depending on what massage head you’re using.

Using the ball head on my back, biceps, pectorals and calves provided instant relief, although I needed to use the bullet head on my hamstrings because none of the other massager heads could penetrate through the thicker muscle mass. The multiple accessory heads help me find the trigger points that I need to loosen up my neck and back muscles. After using the mini-massage gun, my muscles feel a lot better, and I can actually sleep deeper at night.

Theragun mini

The Therabody Prime, Elite, and Pro go a step further with Bluetooth connectivity, which automatically sets the gun to the appropriate PPM and tells the user when they’re applying an optimal amount of force. This is a very helpful feature for those of us without a lot of massage gun experience and allows even the non-athlete to fully reap the benefits from their Theragun.

The smaller, less-expensive Theragun Mini lacks that Bluetooth connectivity, so while you’ll still be able to utilize all of the programs in the app, you won’t have as much guidance or feedback. Since the Therabody app is free and doesn’t require the purchase of a Theragun product to download, there’s fundamentally no difference between using the Mini to follow along, or purchasing a cheaper massage gun and doing the same.
