Average Running Costs of a 50 Pint Dehumidifier

The cost to run a dehumidifier depends on pint rating, running time, and unit’s overall efficiency. Every unit has a different running cost, but it’s relatively easy to calculate yours. First, you need to know how much your utility provider charges per kilowatt area (just look at your last energy bill).

Then multiply that value with how much power the unit draws in watts, which you should be able to find on the unit or in the user manual. Multiply them together, and you’re left with the average cost per hour of running the machine.

What is good in TaoTronics dehumidifier with pump 50 pint for 4500 sq. ft?

The unit by TaoTronics is the best rated 50-pint dehumidifier on the market. Covering up to 4500 square feet, this is the perfect moisture-removing solution for large spaces like living rooms, basements, and master bedrooms. However, it can also be used for smaller rooms prone to too much humidity, like bathrooms and closets.

So why does the Taotronics humidifier have such high ratings? First of all, it’s impressively energy-efficient and even has an Energy Star rating to prove it. While removing up to 50 pints of moisture from the air per day, it still meets all the strict DOE standards for energy-efficient operation.

Second, this dehumidifier is “smart” in all the right ways. It comes with a built-in humidity and temperature sensor that intelligently maintains room humidity in the comfortable range of 45%-55%, so just turn it on and start enjoying ideal moisture levels for comfort and health.

Another feature that adds to convenience is the easy drainage. If you prefer to divert water out through a basement window or bathroom sink, all you have to do is connect a hose to the drain outlet, and the dehumidifier will continuously drain. That means there’s no need to ever manually empty the water tank. Just be aware, the hose isn’t included, so you’ll have to buy one separately.

TaoTronics dehumidifier with pump 50 pint for 4500 sq. ft reviews

Our thermostats for upstairs and downstairs have been warning us that the humidity in the house was getting above 70%. It’s Houston so we’re used to humidity but something needed to be done. After all the research I settled on the TaoTronics Dehumidifier because it’s a brand I’m familiar with with past purchases and it includes a water pump. I wasn’t sure I’d need a pump but after using this for a couple of hours the very first day I realized it was a smart move.

-Power consumption
Please see the images. In short I feel that this will be saving us money since the AC units should be able to cool more efficiently with out the air being almost 70% humidity.

– Noise level
Not much to complain about here. The sound level is what you would expect. I compared to the readings of my white noise machine on low and they come up with almost identical readings.

– Pump
I first turned the device on at 10am after leaving it to sit for 24hrs as the directions call for. The picture of the water tank was taken at 2:55pm so it only took about 5 hours to fill the water tank! Most of our humidity happens at night so before bed I hooked up the included pump hose and ran it into a nearby sink. I checked the hose in the morning and the sink side was dripping from where it hand drained itself. I’m so glad went for the pump. There is also an option to hook up a normal hose and let gravity do its thing but i didn’t feel like drilling holes, running the hose out of a window or raising the device above a sink. Yay pump 🙂

-Humidity detection
When placed next to a standalone thermostat the readings were spot on.

How to clean the TaoTronics dehumidifier with pump 50 pint?

Cleaning the Main Unit

Switch OFF and unplug the dehumidifier from the electrical outlet. Use a soft cloth with water or a mild detergent to clean the outer case. Do not use bleach or other abrasive cleaners, etc. on and/or in the unit while cleaning as they will damage the product. Use a vacuum attachment or soft brush to clean the air outlet grille which can get soiled
easily.

Do not splash water directly onto the main unit. Doing so may cause an electrical shock, insulation deterioration, or rust in the unit. Do not stick any foreign objects or your fingers inside of the unit.

Cleaning the Air Filter

The Air Filter located at the back of the dehumidifier helps to remove dust particles from the air. For optimum dehumidification, it is recommended to clean the air filter every 2 weeks based on normal operating conditions.

1 Switch OFF and unplug the dehumidifier from the electrical outlet.
2 Carefully pull out the filer from the dehumidifier.
3 Rinse the air filter under running water, or vacuum away the dust with a vacuum cleaner.
4 Dry in a cool, shaded place, then carefully install it back to the unit.

Cleaning the Water Bucket

To prevent growth of mold, mildew and bacteria, it is recommended to clean the water bucket based on actual conditions.
1 Partially fill the bucket with clean water and add a little mild detergent. Swish it around in the bucket, empty and rinse.
2 After cleaning, place the water bucket back and secure properly in place for the dehumidifier to operate.

Perfect Aire

Most Energy Efficient 50 Pint Dehumidifier

Water Tank Size6 liters
CoverageUp to 3000 sq. ft.
Noise Levels54 dBA
Energy Star RatedYes
Built-In PumpNo

The Perfect Aire 50 pint dehumidifier is an excellent choice if energy efficiency is your main priority.

According to the Perfect Aire brand, “this unit is as efficient as it is effective, allowing you to take control of your ideal humidity levels with an adjustable humidistat and self-regulating comfort option.”

This model comes in 2 different sizes, so if 50 pints is a bit of an overkill for you, you have the option for a 30-pint unit as well. For the 50-pint option, the coverage area is up to 3000 square feet. The unit operates at 2 different speeds. It includes a direct drainage option if you prefer continuous draining over manual emptying. Just keep in mind there’s no built-in pump, so the water will have to be drained downwards.

The only not-so-great thing about the Perfect Aire unit is the somewhat outdated design. Even with modern, up-to-date features, the overall dehumidifier design looks like something you’d see from an older model. The good news is that the high-efficiency performance makes up for the lackluster aesthetics.

The bucket that stores the water after it’s been drawn from the air is easily accessible and is built with a transport handle for hassle-free carrying. It has all the right features you need for optimal efficiency, including an automatic defrost control, a side exhaust, and a Comfort setting that lets you control humidity based on room temperature.

Pros

  • Auto defrost control
  • Low operating temperature
  • Washable filter
  • Removable casters for portability
  • Low power consumption

Cons

  • Somewhat outdated design
  • Drainage feature, but no pump

hOmeLabs Dehumidifier

Best 50 Pint Dehumidifier for Bedrooms
Water Tank Size6.8 liters
CoverageUp to 3000 sq. ft.
Noise Levels<51 dBA
Energy Star RatedYes
Built-In PumpNo

Bedroom dehumidification on your agenda? You’ll definitely want to check out the HomeLabs 50 pint dehumidifier. This unit is great for large rooms and bedrooms, covering up to 3000 square feet and removing up to 50 pints of water per day according to the 2012 DOE standards. However, with the new standards in place, just be aware that this dehumidifier is considered a 35-pint unit.

Another feature that makes this a great choice for bedrooms is the quiet fan. It’s still audible, but it won’t produce enough noise to keep you awake or disturb your movie night. On top of that, all the settings are super easy to use; just set it to your ideal moisture setting and let it run its continuous 24-hour cycle until the tank is full, at which point it will automatically shut-off.

Since it’s another Energy Star certified product, it quickly and effectively absorbs moisture without racking up your energy bill. The modern look makes it clear that it was designed specifically for the modern home. It has clean, sleek lines, and even though it’s not the most portable dehumidifier, it has convenient built-in wheels and handles for easy movement from bedroom to bedroom.

If you aren’t keen on manually emptying the tank, no worries. The HomeLabs comes with a drain hose outlet for continuous draining. There’s no pump, so only gravity-fed drainage works, and you’ll have to purchase the hose separately, but all in all, this is a top choice for any bedroom.

Pros

  • Quiet fan
  • Easy to use controls
  • Modern design
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Complaints of inefficiency on high
  • Only 35 pint unit with new DOE standards

MIDEA MAD50C1ZWS

Best 50 Pint Dehumidifier for Basement
Water Tank Size7 liters
CoverageUp to 4500 sq. ft.
Noise Levels<51 dBA
Energy Star RatedYes
Built-In PumpNo

The University of Minnesota says that moisture in basements is common because “houses and basements can be structurally sound but are often not properly built to handle water drainage.”

That means that too much moisture builds up over time, eventually causing major problems. The Midea 50 pint dehumidifier can help, especially since it was specifically designed for use in large basements.

This unit (previously rated as the 70-pint option by older DOE standards) is suitable for covering an area up to 4500 square feet. Most Midea 50 pint dehumidifier reviews agree that it’s the best choice for basements since it’s straightforward to maintain and allows for gravity-fed continuous draining. Like the Perfect Aire unit, it doesn’t have a pump, so the drainage hose needs to be positioned downwards from the unit.

There’s an auto-restart function, a “Clean Filter” indicator, a timer, a turbofan setting… Basically, all the innovative features you need for maintaining healthy humidity in your basement, bedroom, bathroom, or any other space you need to dehumidify. The Midea company claims that the max noise level is 51 decibels, but some users have complained about the loud operation, especially on the turbofan speed.

Pros

  • Large coverage area
  • Great for high-moisture rooms
  • Easy maintenance
  • Filter cleaning alerts
  • Big water tank

Cons

  • Only allows for gravity-fed draining
  • Can be noisy on turbo

Will a Dehumidifier Kill Mold?

Mold is a fungus that thrives in moist, warm, and damp environments. Once established, you must remove the mold to prevent regrowth or spread across your home. Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air, making a less hospitable environment for mold to grow. However, dehumidifiers themselves do not kill mold.
