Design
TiVo Edge measures 1.8 by 11.4 by 7.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.9 pounds, making it shorter and sleeker than the boxy Fire TV Recast. The TiVo Edge looks like a stack of two flat, glossy black plastic boxes.
The Xfinity X1 is one of the best DVRs in the cable TV industry, primarily because of its features and technology. But the X1 might not be the best when it comes to pricing. It is box shaped and compact.

To put 150 hours in perspective, you can record 30 episodes of The Office, 30 episodes of Family Feud, 20 episodes of The Murder Tapes, 10 soccer games, and 28 movies.
HDR image
High-definition TV broadcasts are largely limited to 720p and 1080i formats, both of which have less detail than the standard 1080p HD format used by most streaming media. Fortunately, the TiVo Edge also incorporates a handful of streaming services into its system, and can output video to your TV at up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.
I have noticed a peculiarity where I set the X1 to 2160p60 4K UHD and the next day it has changed to 1080p60 HD (for Sony Bravia is 4K UHD). I’d say, for me, that 1080p60 HD looks the same as my TiVo Roamio, while 2160p60 4K UHD looks a little better than the TiVo Roamio.
Channels jump
On the TiVo you enter the new channel number and it changes to that channel. On the X1 you enter the new channel number and get a search box where you select the channel (it’s always the top-most result) and press the center OK button. I need to use voice control more often to change channels, it works quite well and is faster than the search method.
Tuners use
I loved being able to switch tuners on the TiVo and having each tuner have a 30 minute buffer. There is no way on an X1 to switch tuners, but the left-arrow button on the remote lets you quickly and easily change channels (to the last nine channels you’ve used) but there is no buffer. I believe the X1 has a 60 minute buffer when you stay on one channel. I have not investigated X1’s “Favorites” feature yet.

As for TiVo’s remote, it remains aggressively chunky with too many extraneous buttons (TiVo’s recommendations don’t even utilize the thumbs-up and -down buttons anymore), but the TiVo Edge for Antenna remote has one major improvement this time around: It’s backlit, so the keys light up when you press them. Strangely, TiVo is sticking cable customers with the non-backlit version for now.
Xfinity X1 Remote
The X1 remote is so impressive, it’s almost worth subscribing to the service just to gain access to it. (We did say almost.) The Xfinity voice remote allows you to perform a variety of functions simply by speaking, including:

The new Apple TV 4K (2021) is great and performs like a dream — yet still may not be worth the upgrade if you already have the previous model. On the outside, the 2nd-gen Apple TV 4K looks identical to its predecessor. The upgrades are all on the inside, notably replacing the A10X chip with an A12 Bionic. Performance seems a few hairs better, plus the Apple TV 4K 2nd-gen supports 4K at 60fps with HDR versus 30fps. Not a ton of apps even offer that level of content right now, mostly sports and other fast-paced action, but it will become more prevalent.
The best thing about the new Apple TV 4K is the redesigned Siri Remote. Many (myself included) hated the old remote and its frustrating touch interface. The new remote retains touch and gestures, but adds actual buttons as well as an intuitive jog wheel that recalls the old iPods of yore. Once again, though, the biggest drawback is the price.
