Does it have night vision? It’s quite simple to install a Nest Cam outside. Simply install the camera after plugging in the cord and adaptor. It is a High Definition security camera with an 8x zoom, 1080p HD, and a 130 degree wide angle view. Night vision lights up the entire picture even when it is dark outside. You can listen to visitors and respond to them using the built-in speaker and microphone. Using the app on your phone, you can access your home security camera from anywhere. Google Nest Cam outdoor smart security camera review
Colour
It has the same modern design as the Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Cam IQ Indoor, its forerunners. It has a stark white camera front with a shiny circular black frame in place of a black frame.
Design
Dimensions | 2.8 x 2.8 x 3.5 inches |

Item Weight | 11 ounces |
Weatherproof
It will continue to function as long as you don’t spray it with anything stronger or submerge it in water. Since the camera is powered by a wire and adapter, you’ll never need to change its batteries. Since it’s an outside camera, it can operate in temperatures ranging from -4 to 104 °F, which may be suitable for some people but not others. The camera is also dust-tight and can even withstand being sprayed with a 6.3 mm water nozzle without suffering any damage thanks to its IP certification of 65.
2-way audio
Fortunately, the Nest Cam Outdoor offers two-way audio, allowing you to communicate with the subject of your camera using the Nest app. You can view actual footage of people utilizing two-way audio to thwart break-ins as they’re happening on the Nest website, which is a terrific way to demonstrate their usefulness.
Video
The Nest Cam Outdoor boasts a large field of view of 130 degrees, 1080p HD video, and eight different zoom levels, all of which meet or exceed industry requirements.
Night Vision
In contrast to a dazzling white light in the middle of the night (pardon the rhyme), infrared sensors are much more undetectable. The Nest Cam Outdoor includes infrared night vision using eight LED sensors, just like its relatives. Because it is more covert, I like infrared night vision over color night vision from brilliant white light.
Store your recording
Things start to go awry in storage. Unfortunately, the Nest Cam Outdoor only offers three hours of free online storage and has no local storage alternatives. After that, you’ll need to spend money on Nest Aware. You’re in luck because Nest recently decreased the cost of cloud storage, making it reasonably priced.
Nest Free | Nest Aware | Nest Aware Plus | |
---|---|---|---|
Event video history | 3 Hrs | 30 | 60 |
24/7 video history | 0 | 0 | 10 |
Monthly price | $0 | $6 | $12 |
Yearly price | $0 | $60 | $120 |
Yearly savings | N/A | $12 | $24 |
Nest Aware also includes some other features, which I’ll talk about in just a few paragraphs.
Motion detection
Although Nest Cam Outdoor lacks person identification and face recognition, you may still purchase it through Nest Aware. You’ll get alerts for dog barking and human speaking in addition to person detection and facial recognition. This will result in messages that are much more important and particular, not merely that your Nest Cam Outdoor detected motion but also that your mail has arrived or that a stranger has knocked on your door.
Smart Home Integration
I wasn’t surprised to see that the Nest Cam Outdoor (installation) works with Amazon Alexa and Fire TV because Google owns Nest, but I was pleasantly happy to learn that the camera works with Google Assistant and Chromecast. Therefore, in addition to controlling the cameras with your voice and watching your footage live on a large screen, you can also connect the cameras to other connected devices in your ecosystem to create useful home automation.
Convenience
Plugging in your Nest Cam Outdoor is the first step in setup. The camera will then be connected to Wi-Fi after you scan the QR code in the Nest app. It’s time to set up your camera now. The Nest Cam Outdoor now comes with a magnetic mount that makes it simple to attach it to any magnetic surface. If you don’t have a choice, you can simply screw it into a wall. Make sure the camera is 25 feet or less from an outlet because it includes a 10-foot cord and an additional 15-foot extension cord. All things considered, using the Nest Cam Outdoor is pretty simple, especially if you already own Nest products.
Nest Cam Outdoor installation steps
You will receive the following items to complete the Nest Cam Outdoor installation process.
- Nest Cam Outdoor
- Power adapter
- Mounting magnet
- Camera wall plate
- Adapter wall plate
- 12 wall screws
- 12 wall anchors
- 9 cable clips
- Instruction manual (on Nest Cam outdoor installation)
Step 1 : Choosing a right place
Check to see if your router at home is still sending a signal to your camera. For the greatest results, Nest advises choosing a location that is between 7 and 10 feet above the ground. Decide where you want to install your new Nest camera before you begin the installation process. Avoid places with direct sunshine or vegetation that could obscure the view.
Since your Nest Cam Outdoor is battery-free, it must always be plugged in. Locate an outdoor plug with a cover or decide on a location where a cord can extend inside. You may dig a hole in your house and feed the cord through it, just like with the Nest Cam IQ.
Step 2: Connect camera with app
Both the Nest app and your account login are required. For assistance adding your new camera to your Nest account, consult the app’s instructions. Before installing the camera, you may test it out and evaluate the picture quality via the livestream that the camera sends directly to the app.
Step 3: Take it outside
You might need to move the router closer to the camera or choose a location closer to your network if you can’t see a livestream from the camera on the Nest app. Your Nest Cam is prepared to go outside when you can watch live video on the Nest app.
Take your Nest camera outside and connect it to an indoor outlet. Check to see whether it can still broadcast live from the location you’ve chosen. For the best results with a security camera like Nest, you’ll need a robust Wi-Fi connection.
Step 4: Attach mounting magnet
Utilizing the two screws that are provided, mount the mounting plate to the wall. Your Nest Cam is attached to the wall mount using a powerful magnet. On the wall or post where the camera will be installed, start by designating pilot holes. If you’re attaching your camera to brick or stone, use wall anchors and masonry drill bits.
Step 5: Place the camera
Place your camera on the mounting magnet after it has been firmly attached to the wall or post. Looking at the livestream on the Nest app will allow you to change the angle. Make sure the location has a clear view and is free from obstructions like direct sunshine, vegetation, and buildings.
Step 6: Make wiring path
Nest advises allowing some slack on the cable’s ends so that it has adequate length to reach. To avoid tampering, we advise hiding the cable or putting it high on the exterior of your home. Make sure your wire can easily reach an outlet because your Nest camera has to be plugged in constantly. Ten feet of cable will be available for you to work with, and cable anchors will prevent the cord from slipping.
Step 7: Install power adapter and use camera
Install the weatherproof adapter flush against the wall, about 18 inches off the ground. Snap the adaptor to the wall plate after securing the wall plate with one of the included screws.
The cable should then be fastened using the supplied cable clamps and screws. Use as many of the nine clips included in the Nest kit as you require to keep the cable in place.
To prevent tampering, bury or otherwise secure the cable. The cable can also be hidden by painting over it. Check the livestream after completing the installation of your Nest Cam Outdoor and make necessary changes for the clearest image.
Google Nest Cam outdoor smart security camera customer review
Excellent camera!!
After thorough research on several different brands, I decided to buy the Nest cameras. I have never owned security cameras, but always wanted some. I saw that these had good reviews and decided to try them out. I made a very good choice in choosing these. No regrets! They are easy to install and awesome quality!! You can also just buy the inside cameras and put it inside your home facing the outside and it still does an awesome job! The outside ones, I installed them outside above a window and just ran the cable through the window and plugged it inside. We did not need to drill any holes and the window closes all the way because the cable is flat. I’m very happy with this purchase! I included a screenshot from my phone of the view. (Disregard yard mess, we’re cleaning up to put new grass. Lol.)

Google Nest Cam outdoor smart security camera alternative
Arlo Pro 2 plus Base Station – wireless outdoor Wi-Fi camera
The Arlo Pro 2 is also a fantastic option if monitoring your children or looking for parcels is more important to you than keeping an eye out for trespassers. It does leave gaps of a few seconds between video clips, and its visuals are not as crisp as those of our top option. However, it’s cordless, making it simple to set up anyplace, and it has a five-minute continuous recording limit.
Additionally, it has the option for local video storage, offers practical smart home connection, and offers seven days of free cloud storage. Additionally, for a price, you can add human, animal, vehicle, and package detection along with greater cloud-based video storage. However, you must plug the camera in during this time.
Google Nest Cam IQ Outdoor
The most advanced outdoor security camera
The most cutting-edge outdoor camera we’ve evaluated is the Google Nest Cam IQ Outdoor. This particular model has a close-up tracking capability that, when it detects motion, automatically zooms in on it and tracks it around the field of view. It contains an 8-megapixel 4K camera, HDR (high dynamic range), and 12x digital zoom to make those shots clear.
It can differentiate between people and general motion, reducing false alarms, and it can even recognize persons you’ve designated (after a learning period). However, like all Nest cameras, this model can only be used for live viewing; anything else requires the Nest Aware subscription.
