Build
The dark-gray matte bezels of the monitor are reasonably thick while the screen is coated with a matte 3H anti-glare coating, which effectively prevents reflections. The back is plastic and plain. There’s a removable clip on the stand that serves as basic cable management, and there’s a quick-release feature to remove the stand if you want to VESA-mount it.
Design
It has a dimension of 24.5 x 8.2 x 18.1 inches and it weighs only 11.25 pounds. The stand of the monitor is tilt-only by -5°/15°, and it’s prone to wobbling. Luckily, you can detach the stand and mount the screen on a third-party stand using the 100x100mm VESA pattern.

UHD screens at 27-inch can provide a level of sharpness that’s fantastic for editing and entertainment purposes.
Image quality
Based on an IPS panel with dithered 10-bit color depth support (8-bit + FRC for 1.07 billion colors), 98% sRGB color gamut and wide 178° viewing angles, the LG 27UL500 monitor delivers gorgeous, accurate and consistent colors.
Brightness
It includes a decent 300-nit peak brightness and a static contrast ratio of 700:1 – 1,000:1 depending on the particular unit of the monitor.
The HDR peak brightness is sub-par. It’s again very consistent across different content, but it’s only slightly brighter than in SDR and not enough to make highlights stand out the way they should in HDR content.
We measured the HDR peak brightness in the ‘HDR Standard’ Picture Mode with Brightness set to max.

The LG 32UL500-W has a large 32 inch screen that provides plenty of space for multitasking, allowing you to place multiple windows side-by-side. The pixel density is still very high despite the bigger screen size, so images and text look incredibly sharp.

Nevertheless, using FreeSync with compatible NVIDIA cards (GTX 10-series or newer) may not necessarily work without issues. Depending on your particular unit of the monitor, graphics card and GPU driver version, FreeSync will either work just fine, or you’ll have to use the Basic mode, which has a narrower VRR range of 48-60Hz.
The LG 27UL500 FreeSync range is 40-60Hz/FPS (Frames Per Second) in the ‘Extended’ mode, so as long as your FPS is within that range, there will be no tearing or stuttering.
The LG 27UL500 is a FreeSync monitor, but it is not listed as G-Sync compatible which is rapidly becoming common in the market. 4K variants have had the most issues with the latter, so we’re hoping Nvidia will work more with these UHD options sometime soon. Input lag is excellently low at 9.5ms, so gamers will not feel delays or “de-synced” instances.

WORKS GREAT FOR WHAT I USE IT FOR
I bought a Mac mini 2020 M 1 and needed a monitor. I had an old monitor which worked fine. However, I wanted at least a 4K or better. The monitor setup easily plugged into the M1 with no issues using an HDMI connector. I did start with a USB c-DVI connection which worked fine. The instructions recommend HDMI so I went back to HDMI. Really the only issue I had the disc that came with the monitor only had a PC-compatible disc instruction. Other than that, the ability of the monitor to be turned vertically horizontally mounted on the wall or other is flexible. At 27 inches there’s nothing outlandishly large about it. I can easily split the screen in half with one document on one side and another document on the other. I do nothing that I think would stress the screen. I don’t game. I do graphics with affinity photo and affinity vector both Apple products and it works fine with those products.

This is probably the best, most cost-effective, and great value way into 4K gaming monitors you’re likely to find. With its price often around or under the $300 and £200 mark, the bang for buck ratio with the BenQ EL2870U is extraordinary. The picture quality and crispness is as good as a lot of its more expensive contemporaries and is some of the best seen on a TN screen right now. Each environment type in games is handled really well with good contrasts, colors, and shades presenting whatever is asked of it; a really good balance in terms of what it’s able to show.
It’s got a speedy 1ms response rate, the usual 4K-monitor 60Hz refresh rate and FreeSync (no G-Sync unfortunately) is present to help smooth out pictures. You’ll also get some neat BenQ-exclusive features with this monitor that others will not be able to offer: Brightness Intelligence + (B.I.+) changes the brightness and color temperature of on-screen images relative to the monitor’s surroundings; and the Low Blue Light Technology is part of the company’s eye-care tech that removes the harmful blue light. These aren’t just clever-sounding features either, and one can definitely feel the benefit over long periods of use – I certainly found it out when I reviewed it for one of our sister sites. Overall, the EL2870U offers a wonderful deal for its price tag; genuine gaming specs on a great 4K monitor for gaming that is crisp and clear, that won’t break the bank.
