Power consumption – Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large room air purifier review

“Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, we need to run an air purifier for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

Even with an Energy Star rating, the power consumption of Alen BreatheSmart is still 120 watts on the highest speed. This power consumption is higher than both Blueair Classic 480i and AIRMEGA 400, not to mention the energy-saving Honeywell HPA600B with only 44 watts on the highest speed.

But you should not worry too much, for using a Alen BreatheSmart 8 hours per day, it would cost you about $43 per year.

From a technical perspective, there are two separate technologies implemented in the Alen BreatheSmart which set this air purifier apart from the competition.

First is Alen’s WhisperMax Technology, a uniquely engineered fan and air chamber design which works to maximize clean air delivery while producing the least amount of external sound possible. With WhisperMax you don’t need to worry about the loud operational sounds that often accompany other lower-end air purifiers.

Secondly, the built-in SmartSensor Technology is constantly assessing the quality of the air that it’s drawing in in order to detect the levels of pollutants and other airborne allergens. Based on the air’s quality, the Alen BreatheSmart HEPA air purifier automatically adjusts its airflow level to ensure maximum purification while using no more energy than needed to effectively clear the space’s air. Not only does this mean less energy consumption, but it also reduces long-term wear and tear on the unit.

Design

he Alen Breathe Smart is a lightweight, customizable air purifier that highlights both smart technology and a simple, yet stylish, design. The model’s plain, big exterior houses a fan and air compartment that is particularly manufactured to let the unit to purify and clean a huge amount of air.

All these products come with a warranty and an energy star licensed. Before you purchase this air purifier, consider its dimensions: 10 x 17.8 x 26.8 inches and its 21-pound weight. Make sure, the device will fit in a corner in your room.

Coverage

This Alen purifier is in fact ideal for rooms as large as 1100 square feet. In addition, the air purifier is set to capture tiny airborne particles measuring in at 0.3 microns, an significant potential that most air purifiers in this price range are unable to meet.

Filter

HEPA-Silver

Ideal for medical offices and immune-compromised households, the BreatheSmart’s HEPA-Silver filter is designed to trap harmful bacteria and germs that spread through the air.

HEPA-Pure

The most basic of the Alen’s filters, the HEPA-Pure is designed for removing dust and other common allergens from your home or office’s air.

HEPA-FreshPlus

Another great option for smoke removal, the HEPA-FreshPlus air filter is specifically designed to removal dangerous chemicals and VOCs – like the toxins present in tobacco smoke – out of the air.

HEPA-OdorCell

If you’re looking for an air purification solution that addresses cigarette and cigar odors and pollutants, you want to go with Alen’s HEPA-OdorCell filter which is great at removing smoke and other heavy airborne odors.

Air Quality Sensor

The Alen uses a series of sensors to constantly gauge the concentration of airborne pollutants indoors. Upon reaching a certain threshold, the air purifier will begin its cleaning cycle by intelligently choosing the appropriate cleaning speed for maximum efficiency.

When the level of pollutants has gone down to a tolerable level, the device will switch to standby mode to, once again, await further cleaning instructions.

CADR Ratings

Even though CADR ratings don’t necessarily mean a whole lot when the highest speed is activated, it can still be a good indicator of how effective it is in smaller capacities. The ratings for this device for dust, smoke, and pollen is 279, 256, and 300 CFM respectively.

Alen BreatheSmart Classic Air Purifier Review
Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large room air purifier review

It’s worth notice that CADR ratings can be affected by the type of filter it comes with. In the case of this Alen BreatheSmart model, its True HEPA Filter actually inhibits airflow and results in lower CADR ratings that it should normally be.

That being said, scoring over 250 CFM on all three categories is amazing.

Noise

the Alen BreatheSmart’s noise level is only 56 decibels (db), which is the same as other ultra high-end devices like IQAir HealthPro Plus, Blueair Pro L or IQAir GC MultiGas. The noise level is higher than the normal conversation at home, but is still acceptable for normal use. Again, there is a pink noise frequency in this Alen BreatheSmart, so even though you run at the highest speed, you are still able to sleep easily.

How does Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large room air purifier work?

Alen BreatheSmart makes use of a 3 stage air filtration process to purify the polluted air inside your home. In contrast to other air purifiers, which pull in dirty air through the front panel, this air purifier has a distinctive design in which the contaminated air is drawn in through the air intake grilles present on the sides and the bottom.

The dirty air at first passes through a washable black foam layer which acts as a pre-filter. Most of the larger sized contaminants like dust and hair are caught here. This pre-filter can be either washed or vacuumed frequently to make sure for the right filtration.

In the following stage of purification, Alen’s HEPA-Pure filter does most of the grunt work by capturing 99.9% of all airborne pollutants. This HEPA-Pure air filter is unique because it’s made of electrostatically charged components that is more efficient in catching pollen, pet dander, mold and other particles.

Next will come an suggested Ozone-safe Ionization phase, that can be triggered by pressing the Ion button on the top panel. Many of you will probably be suspicious about using an ionizer, because it might produce ozone as a by-product. But that is not the case with the Alen BreatheSmart Classic; their advanced ionization system doesn’t generate dangerous ozone.

At last, the pollutant-free purified air is sent out through the top. A effective fan makes sure that the pure air that is provided through the top grill hits the ceiling and then spreads uniformly across your room.

Other features – Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large room air purifier review

Turbo-Mode

This is the maximum fan setting that enhances filtration. This setting is utilized when there is a lot of dust, particles, pollen and allergens indoors. It quite helps to get rid of those harmful particles rapidly from the air.

Auto-Mode

Auto-mode is a smart technology that instantly detects the air quality in your home and changes the settings to the level needed, from low filtration speed up to Turbo-mode. This is perfect so that you do not have to guess which level is best for your house.

Self-Timer

The Alen BreatheSmart will come with a self-timer setting that can be set for 4, 8, or 12 hours at any given time. This is perfect for when you want a particular setting for hours. This self-timer also works well with the safety off function.

HEPA certification logo

The Alen BreatheSmart makes use of a pre-filter that can be cleaned or vacuumed to filter out large dust particles and hair follicles. The Alen BreatheSmart Classic also uses a HEPA filter to get rid of smaller airborne particles and allergens.

This HEPA filter should be replaced every 6-8 months. The filter signal light shifts from green (good filter) to yellow (need to replace soon) and finally to red (replace now) to let you understand when the HEPA filter needs to be replaced. The HEPA filter can eliminate up to 99.97% of air particles 0.3 microns or bigger.

Ionizer

There is an ionizer soft touch control switch that is ozone safe and you can switch it on or off as required. When “on”, the ionizer will pull small particles and clump them together to help in easier filtration.

Alen BreatheSmart Classic Large room air purifier customer review

Very happy so far

I purchased this air purifier about 2 months ago. Since that time it has performed as advertised. I have it located in my 900sq ft basement – in a home I had just purchased. The previous owner did not use the basement except for her 5 cats and their litter box. Needless to say, I am very allergic to cats and react strongly to dust allergians as well (of which, there was plenty). The Alen BreatheSmart has allowed me to spend time in the basement (after some rigorous initial dusting and cleaning as well) without any issues. The colored air sensor is amazing! Each day when I head downstairs I can visibly see the sensor shows blue for clean air. This is after the basement and its air were left undisturbed overnight and the purifier was able to work its magic. The sensor then reacts as expected if I am downstairs working or playing with the kids, kicking up dust and carpet fibers. The sensor will change to orange or sometimes red and will automatically adjust the fan speed to high to counteract the contaminated air. After a while, the fan speed will lower and the sensor returns to blue. On most fan speed settings the fan noise is unnoticeable – the only time I really hear the fan, is when it’s kicks on to high for brief periods to quickly clean the air. Very happy. Considering buying a second one for my upstairs!

Alen BreatheSmart FIT50 Review (2nd Best For Standard Bedrooms)

Pros

  • The quietest 1st line BreatheSmart unit (32-49 dB)
  • Biggest choices of a particular filter
  • Still enough affordable price even for buying 2-3 units

Cons

  • Lower CADR rating (price of getting noise levels so low)

FIT50 is a bit bigger than FLEX; it has a 900 sq ft maximum coverage. It also has a higher airflow (231 CFM) but, quite paradoxically, a lower CADR rating.

A lower CADR rating, of course, is not ideal. So why did the Alen engineers not increase it? Well, because they didn’t want to increase the noise levels.

FIT50 is, in fact, the only old BreatheSmart series air purifier that operates entirely under 50 dB. It’s noise levels range from 32 dB (low fan speed setting) to 49 dB (turbo setting). In short, the CADR rating was sacrificed to make a more quiet air purifier.

Noise-wise, it can be compared to the new BreatheSmart 45i and 75i. But there is a reason why those two are more advanced; quite honestly, the FIT50 has lost its 1st place air purifier for a standard-sized bedroom to 45i.

The filtration system is based on the True HEPA filters like all BreatheSmart units. In addition to this basic (Fit50 900SqFt) filter, you can choose:

  • FIT50Aallergies/Dust filter.
  • FIT50 Mold/Bacteria filter.
  • FIT50 OdorCell FF50-MP Pet Dander/Odor filter.
  • FIT50 FreshPlus Smoke/Chemical filter. Primarily against VOCs.

Alen BreatheSmart FLEX Review (Smallest BreatheSmart Air Purifier For Kids Rooms)

Pros

  • Surprisingly high 225 CADR rating, given 187 CFM airflow
  • Appropriate for small rooms up to 700 sq ft (kids rooms, for example)
  • Has several special filters for smoke, odor, and even heavy smoke (wildfires)
  • It is the cheapest Alen BreatheSmart unit

Cons

  • Has a bit high noise level (up to 55 dB on turbo setting)
  • It’s outpaced by it’s similar successor BreatheSmarth 45i (4# review)

FLEX is the smallest BreatheSmart air purifier. It has a 700 sq ft maximum coverage area; that’s why it’s perfect for kids’ rooms.

The filter is the standard Medical Grade HEPA filter. It removes allergens, dander, mold, dust, and all kind of smokes exceptionally well.

FLEX is powered by up to 45 Watts. That’s enough to create a maximum of 187 CFM airflow with a 225 CADR rating. That’s a higher CADR rating than the bigger FIT50 BreatheSmart unit.

The filters for FLEX are the least expensive. They last for about 12 months; 9 months, if you use it 24h per day.

In addition to the B4-Pure/FL40-Pure HEPA filter (Dust, Mold, Pet Odors), you can choose these specialized filters:

  • FLEX Smoke filter FL40H. Additionally, removed heavy smoke, toxic chemicals (VOCs), wildfire smoke.
  • FLEX OdorCell Filter B4. This is an activated charcoal filter that reduces odor (the kitchen is full of undesired odors, for example).

All in all, FLEX is actually the very best of the first 3 BreatheSmart air purifiers; you can read the full Alen BreatheSmart FLEX HEPA air purifier review here. It’s more appropriate for smaller rooms, such as the bedrooms and kid’s bedrooms.

Now, there is big, there is the bigger Classic model, and at the end of the line, it’s the Alen BreatheSmart 75i. In fact, the 75i model is an upgrade of the very popular Classic model from the 1st BreatheSmart series.

That model had some room for improvement. High wattage isn’t eco-friendly, and the noise levels were a bit too high.

The 75i model solves both those issues:

  • An eco-friendly 45W max engine powers it.
  • The 75i is the quietest large room air conditioner with up to only 49 dB noise levels.

Now, both of these specs are brilliant.

But it gets better:

75i outmatches all BreatheSmart model in capacity. Get this: it has a CADR rating of 350. All other units have a CADR rating of 200ish, or 300 (Classic model). With such a high CADR rating, 75i is more than capable of covering 1,300 sq ft; that’s almost unheard of. As such, the 75i model is considered to be the best air purifier for large 1000+ sq ft rooms, as seen here.

All in all, 75i BreatheSmart is an engineering masterpiece. Add the brilliant True HEPA filters, which are the basis of the BreatheSmart air purifiers, and you have yourself the best large room air purifier.

If one unit should be called ‘The Best Alen BreatheSmart Air Purifier’, it would definitely be the new SmarteBreathe 45i model. The 45i model is also considered to be the best overall air purifier for bedrooms.

In one swoop, Alen has upgraded both the FLEX and FIT 50 by creating the 45i model. They took the strong points (quiet operation, high CADR, low power expenditure) and used them all when creating the 45i model.

Here are some examples:

  • 45i has a very high CADR rating of 245 (FLEX has 225, FIT50 has 220).
  • 45i is the quietest BreatheSmart unit (even quieter than FIT50).
  • It conserves energy well and is eco-friendly, with only 60W max. power.

All in all, it’s not hard to see that everybody wants Alen BreatheSmart 45i in 2021. It is the upgraded line, insanely quiet, can fit pretty much any space below 800 sq ft, and you can easily buy several of them.

It is also the highest rated BreatheSmart air purifier on Amazon:
