At the bottom edge, there’s a small motion sensor, but it’s not terribly obtrusive. The power is supplied by a simple AC/DC adapter that plugs into your wall outlet. There’s also an internal battery, but it’s primarily designed as a backup in case your power goes out. The AC/DC adapter plugs into the bottom of the kickstand, which has a gooseneck design. You can flex it as needed for various angles, or for portrait or landscape orientation.

Build
The frame is black ABS plastic, with a matte finish that won’t collect fingerprints and is easy to keep clean. There’s no border or fake matting around the screen. It runs right up to the edge of the frame, without any extra decorations.
Design
The Nixplay 10.1” Smart Photo Frame has a slick, modern design.. In all, the frame measures 10.55 inches tall, 7.36 inches wide, and 1.22 inches thick in portrait orientation. And at only 1.3 pounds, it’s easy to hang without the need for special hardware. The Nixplay Smart Photo Frame has a scalloped design on the back, which seems superfluous at first.
Display
The display has a matte coating to reduce reflection, and I would certify that they have done an excellent job here. The Nixplay Seed uses an IPS display, which provides excellent colors across all viewing angles.
The display has a resolution of 1280 x 800 px, which results in a dots-per-inch value of almost 150, which makes images look very sharp.
Frame
You can mount the Nixplay frame on your wall. There are a total of eight screw slots, which allow you to hang it in any orientation. To access them, simply remove the kickstand, then plug the power adapter in directly.
Stand
Instead of a stand, the Nixplay Seed has a rigid woven power cord, which acts as a stand that you can adjust in many ways in both portrait and landscape orientation.
WiFi connectivity
When you power on the Nixplay frame is connect it to your WiFi network. You can do this through the menu, and the process is relatively straightforward. However, it will only connect to the 2.4GHz wireless band, not the 5GHz band.
Motion sensor
By default, the built-in motion sensor will turn your frame on or off automatically. When you enter the room, it will turn on, and it will stay on until there’s no motion for 30 minutes. You can control your Nixplay Smart Photo Frame with a voice assistant such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The voice control allows you the same options as the controller.
Remote
Along with the frame itself, you also get a nifty remote control. It has a full array of controls, which allow you to turn the frame on or off, skip photos, or choose a playlist. You can also access the frame’s menu to adjust more advanced options. If you don’t want to use the remote on a daily basis, there’s a handy storage option. Part of the frame back is magnetized, as is the remote. Slap it in place, and you’re good to go.
Apps
The frame’s mobile app lets you lets you connect to and control your frame from anywhere, which is especially useful for elderly or non-technical family members. Because it works via Wi-Fi, there’s no physical input, such as SD cards or USB sticks, but the frame does have 8GB of onboard memory for direct storage of photos and video.
Image viewing options
Nixplay has done a very nice job with image transitions, often a weak point of picture frames. There are eight different ways of displaying your photos including
- Fit to screen where the image is shown uncropped and the resulting bars (if the iaspect ratio of the image is unlike the aspect ratio of the frame) have a color that is present in the image.
- Fill screen – photos are stretched so that you won’t see any black bars.
- Pan – slightly moves the image
- Pan & zoom – Moving and zooming
- Tiles – show four photos as the same time and rotate the images individually
- Snapshot – every image has a small white frame around it and they are stacked like if you were looking through a number of photos.
You can also specify playback of only the latest 100, 200, 500 or 1000 images.
How to use Nixplay Smart Digital Picture frame 10.1 inch?
After the frame finished updating and was connected, the app can “look” for a connected frame and connect automatically. Alternatively, the serial number can be manually entered.
Creating a photo playlist is simple and can be accomplished using photos and videos from a smartphone or Google account. You can also make a “cloud album” playlist comprised of photos previously uploaded to Nixplay.
The frame automatically switches between portrait and landscape. There are plenty of customizations for the display such as “pan and scan,” intervals, display hours, motion sensors, and other doodads.
I started a playlist and added photos, but found I could only load 100 at a time. I can add more pictures to the playlist in successive operations. Upload of 100 photos took just under a minute. There is a healthy amount of memory in the frame with 500 photos occupying about 9% of the frame’s internal memory.
Videos are clipped to 15 seconds. Audio from the tiny 2-Watt speakers is relatively anemic, but this is a picture frame, right? If I wanted full sound and video, I would play them on my home theater, so no points lost there.
The app also has a screen that more-or-less duplicates the included infrared remote.
The infrared remote is powered by a single button cell battery and controls all of the frame’s functions except loading media.
A feature I LOVE is magnetic storage for the remote control. A strong magnet built into the back of the remote allows it to be stored on the back of the frame, on the door of the refrigerator, or a magnetic whiteboard hanging in your office. No more needing to hunt for which drawer you put the darn thing. I think this is a great idea and wish other appliances had this handy feature!
