August WiFi Smart Lock installation video instructions guide

August WiFi Smart Lock installation instructions guide overview:

  1. Tape the exterior part of your deadbolt to your door to hold it in place while you install the August lock.
  2. Remove your existing thumb latch. (The inside part of your deadbolt.) You’ll need a Phillips head screwdriver.
  3. Use the screws from your existing thumb latch to attach the August mounting plate to the inside of your door.
  4. Choose the correct adapter for your lock based on the shape of your tail piece and attach the adapter to the tail piece.
  5. On the August lock itself, pull out the wing latches on either side.
  6. Slide the lock onto the adapter and close the wing latches to secure it to the mounting plate.
  7. Take off the faceplate and pull out the battery tab to activate the battery.
  8. Download the August app and set up the lock as a new device.

Before disassembling anything on your door, you should check a few things. Make sure your door closes easily and all the way. If you need to give it an extra shove or pull up or down on hinges, a smart lock will have a difficult time calibrating and operating successfully.

What you’ll need

August WiFi Smart Lock installation instructions guide

With your door check-up completed, you can open up the August box and get started. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock comes with nearly everything you need to self-install. All you need to bring is a screwdriver.

Step 1 : Download the app

Download the August Home app for iOS or Android. Create an account or log in if you’ve already made one. Select “set up a device” then “set up a smart lock” and select the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock. When prompted, scan the QR code on the inside of the lock’s faceplate. You’ll be provided with installation instructions you can follow step by step.

Step 2: Add strip to keep lock in place

Use the supplied adhesive strip to hold the keyed side of the lock in place.

Step 3: Existing thumbturn removal

Be sure to position the thumbturn so that you can access both screws so that you can entirely remove the thumbturn. Unscrew and remove the screws from your existing deadbolt thumbturn. If there is an additional back plate, remove that as well.

Step 4: Mounting plate

Remove the screws from the thumbturn and insert them into the front of the mounting plate. The included mounting plate has two adjustable screw-holes that can be repositioned as needed.

Tighten the screws by hand until the mounting plate is secured against the door. PLEASE NOTE: Over-tightening the screws may lead to issues over time. Additional guidance is available here.

Step 5: Find correct adapter

The correct adapter will slide onto the tailpiece with minimal effort. Select your adapter depending on the tailpiece shape and orientation of your existing deadbolt.

Place the correct adapter onto the tailpiece. One of the triangle shaped nubs will be pointing up if you have selected the correct adapter for your deadbolt.

Step 6: Rotate the thumbturn

Rotate the thumbturn all the way to the locked or unlocked position, which may take some moderate force. The direction you turn depends on which side of the door your deadbolt is on. If it is locked, turn the thumbturn to locked and the reverse for the unlocked scenario.

Step 7: Attach the August Smart Lock

Pull out both side wing latches to prepare for mounting.

Before placing the August Smart Lock on the door, ensure the thumbturn is in the correct position.

Slide the August Smart Lock over the tailpiece and attach it to the mounting plate. Make sure the back of the lock is flush with the door. To secure the August Smart Lock, clamp down both side wing latches to the mounting plate completely.

Step 8: Faceplate & battery tab removal

Slide the top of the front face upwards to remove the battery compartment cover. While holding the batteries in place, remove the clear plastic battery isolation tab on the left side. Make sure that the battery is properly seated in its compartment.

NOTE: Avoid pulling the longer gray tab, as it will remove all of the batteries.

Step 9: Finish setup in the app

Place the faceplate back onto the August Smart Lock over the batteries until it clicks into place.

Now install the DoorSense™. DoorSense™ enables your lock to know when the door is open and closed. For DoorSense™ installation instructions, select the DoorSense™ Installation tab above to get started.

Now that the install is done, you’ll need to calibrate your lock and connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi. If you’ve left the app open at the installation instructions section, tap “continue” to begin the calibration. Next, connect the lock to your Wi-Fi by entering your network credentials. With these two steps completed, your lock is ready to use. The August app has further options for naming your home and lock, as well as adding users and setting up features such as auto lock and chime volume.

What is good in August WiFi Smart Lock?

Design

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is 45% smaller than its predecessors, measuring 2.83 inches in diameter and just 1.81 inches in depth.

Build

Nearly all smart locks require this aesthetic obstruction, relying on a large battery and thumb latch housings mounted on the interior side of your door.

As for compatibility, the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock works with AlexaGoogle and Siri for voice commands as well as routines and automation with your platform of choice. Assigning virtual keys to additional lock users remains free, a highlight of August’s policies, and you’ll also get plenty of options for setting notifications when something happens, or doesn’t, at your door.

DoorSense

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock comes with a DoorSense sensor, so you can know if someone leaves the door open or closes it but leaves it unlocked.

Geo-fencing

I’ve always been fond of August’s geofencing auto-lock and -unlock capabilities, and that remains true for this model. When your mobile device is 200 meters (656 feet) from your home either leaving or returning, the lock will lock or unlock.

CR123 battery

the first August model with the CR123 battery. The team at August estimates the lock’s batteries should last three to six months. That’s a shorter suggested lifespan than the six months to a year promised for the older, AA models.

App

It uses two-factor authentication to log into your account or create a new one. It also uses Bluetooth encryption, AES 128-bit and TLS encryption for the mobile app. You can even disable your August app and all virtual keys at any time via a special desktop site if your phone is lost or stolen. Voice unlocking via the various virtual assistants requires a spoken PIN.

Lost phone

In case of phone loss, you have the option to disable the app and every single active virtual keys on added devices using a dedicated website.
